        Hey,

Well that set have since been removed & inspected.
They had no blow by, they also had a good sealing surface.

So good work to the owner for good pick up checking this time.
The problem is it did have blow by prior to its injector replacement 5000k ago, the oil pickup was obviously not accurately checked by the owner then.

The reason it had blow by prior, was d.i.y injector change, although he is an engineer, he still made a few mistakes.
Including under torquing the injector clamps.

This is the set of BDG sheets/seats removed 5000k

They do go black very fast.

To be fair, my suggestion yesterday, was to clean pickup, run for another 5000k & check again.
He wanted to be sure, we are sure now.

Check your oil pick up - make sure you start clean

Whenever I check an oil pickup, I make an allowance for vehicles which have had blow by.
There my be some residual crap in the system, so each service I may give it a clean through the hole.
If it has only a few specs on it, nothing to worry about, but it should reduce each service, within a few.

You need to know your starting point, if it starts off dirty & blocked, it's going to be dirty & blocked.

From a distance this is blocked.

          An ideal one

          Pretty easy to see yes........

####, whats your routine for giving the pickup a quick clean through the sump plug hole, there is not much room to get anything decent in there to do the job.

I have a series of small brashes, with metal stem I have bent on various angles.
Can of spray degreaser, spray brush, spray brush, etc.
Let it all drain. Pour a litre of oil to flush out crap & degreaser.

Ends up Sludging up a $500 fuel pump, filter, fuel pressure reg etc. and a low power/no start condition. Not as bad as a blown motor but certainly a expensive pain in the ass and hard to diagnose properly, he has 185k on the clock and 3 fuel pumps and a fuel reg to date, told him to change the fuel filter ever service and cut it open to check. As well as injector seals every 50,000km it's only a $30 set of seals and few hrs labour compared to the whole fuel system change and tank drop and flush.
Having previously owned a TD5 you need to tell you brother that this is a known problem with the copper and the fix is to use the aluminium washers that were used on the first batch of TD5s that have no problems. I understood that the copper washers were ditched once the problem was identified with later model TD5s again getting aluminium for injector seals.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up. We searched aulro forum if there was an upgraded part and didn't find anything.

                    Good evening,

Well it has been a couple of years since I have been on here but now heading into the cooler weather I have started to get the cold start knock. Prompted me to come and have another look here to see what others have experience over the last couple of years.

So tonight I have done an oil and filter change and checked my oil pickup.

I must be a lucky one by the looks, I did have a very small (about one maggots worth) of crap on the filter. I have now given it a clean as described above and it will now become a regular check for me.

I thought I would share with others what I have done with mine seeing as I have just clicked over 196k km and have had no issues. I don't know if it more luck than good servicing.

So I have a September 2007 build 120 Series GXL. I do my own filter and oil changes and it has only ever been to a Toyota service centre once in that time (I wasn't impressed with 1. cost and 2. service I got, so have never been back). I have only ever used genuine oil/air filters and use Penrite HPR5 Diesel oil since new. I have regularly used a diesel additive (Moreys Diesel conditioner about every second tank) and only use BP Diesel (function of being a lease car and some research). Both fuel filters are changed at 20k intervals.

During the cooler months I do allow 10min to warm the engine up before driving but have never baby'd the car. I tow, 4wd and generally abuse it like a sports car on occasions.

I have just ticked over 196k km and will now go and get the injectors cold start tested and fully expect to them to need replacing. These are the original injectors.

Tomorrow I have set the day aside to fit the EGR restrictor and give the inlet manifold a complete clean. I am hoping to be lucky and see a relatively clean system. I will document the process and post it up here for others to see.

Finally, a big thanks to #######Prado for sharing his experience and wisdom here so we can all learn from others unfortunate misfortune.
                    [B]Cheers

Glad you returned & Good work!

Do yourself a big favour, find someone who can do this job right, or do it yourself, get those injectors replaced with a new set. They are shagged! Also you will have the copper seats/seals.
New Injectors = new fuel pipes.

Thankx for the big Thankx! Glad to be of assistance to #########

Sorry, I should have mentioned I had the seats checked and replaced just over 3 years ago. The place I had them replaced at said it was strange cause I had the new type fitted already.

                            Hi ####,
The above posts about blocked oil pick-up are very well done, you have got me a bit scared to look now. I have been trusting Toyota to do the right thing, Silly me. I have a small vibration between 1000 & 2000 rpm. Could this be associated with above?

                            Kind regards
                            Jon

Yes, silly is probably the kindest word we could use here.
