  • Get together reccie

First stage of our Gibb reccie is complete.
We have just rolled into Kununurra after spending a week on the Gibb river Rd with the Gibb Challenge, a charity bike ride(mountain bike) that was raising funds for the Sirens of Silence charity http://www.sirensofsilence.org.au
We had a great time, though I'm not sure my liver thinks so!
Along the way we spoke to various station stays about our plans for next year, and in a few days time we will be turning around and travelling back along the Gibb to work out the itinerary.
But first we're going out to lake Argyle to check that out as a possible start point.
    Can't we just keep travelling?

Depths can vary by a big margin in the space of a day or two. As long as there hasn't been significant rainfall close to the time of your journey you will be okay. It's dry season now so shouldn't be a worry.

Hopefully it is not a wet dry ! FNQ got a drenching today, could trap a few folk.

Where did your week start? How any Klm's did you travel? What was the gibb like atm? Bad corrugations or ok?
No it's not 20 questions so I will stop it now.

          Cheers

Went from Derby to ElQuestro. Just straight through along the Gibb about 700km, will be doing a few side trips on the way back.
The road was the best I've ever seen it! Could've been because of the rain keeping traffic off it for the week before we got there. Saw more buses than we'd ever seen too, they'd all been held up because of the rain and were making up time.
As Dave said, creek depths vary depending on rainfall, none were much deeper than the side steps when we came through, the deepest being Barnett river. The Pentecost is also tidal at the croosing so often flows upstream!
About to head back out on the Gibb this afternoon.
            Can't we just keep travelling?

Sounds good to me. Making it either the starting point of at least part of the GTG would work great for us so we don't have to try and plan a visit there before the GTG.

              Just my 2 cents worth.

Just lobbed into Derby, stage two of the reccie is complete!
Spoke to a few more people at places we will be staying. Checked out the sights, swam in some gorges, had a campfire, drank some beer. Bell Gorge was great this morning! It's hard work I know.
Still got to do a little tweaking of the itinerary, but will work out around 14 nights from Lake Argyle to Broome.
We tried to include a bush camp(free) in there but couldn't really find a nice spot that could fit a big group in. So each night will be a paid camp.
Now to sort it all out so we can lock in the dates.

Nothing like Tassie prices I'm afraid!
They average about $40 for a couple but we're hoping to reduce that a little because we'll be treated as a tour group.
This won't be a cheap trip.

Oh and as of 2 days ago, diesel at Mt Barnett was $2.05 and unleaded was $2.15.
Diesel at Derby was $1.42 today.

Yeah, that I know - we are going to be gone for at least 8 weeks....
