Sounds like a good run around the country, keen to hear how it it out there. Watch the road from Dalhousie to Purni- Very very corrugated. I highly recommend Old Andado if time allows.

To save me from creating a new thread, I'll hijack this one...

I haven't been too active on PP since relocating from Tassie to Port Macquarie a few years ago, mainly due to having the rig pretty well set up to suit my needs now, but I do check in from time to time.

For anyone interested, my family and I have just returned from a 2 week outback trip from Port Macquarie, through Broken Hill, up to Marree and completing the Oodnadatta Track, beyond Oodnadatta to Mt Dare, then across the Simpson (we did the French Line) to Birdsville, on to Innamincka, Thargominda, Lightning Ridge, then home via Walcha. It was a whirlwind tour with the wife and 3 kids (we never stayed in the same place twice), but what a great experience!

We are fortunate enough to own a Patriot Campers X1 Limited Edition, which we collected in August last year, and while we have done plenty of weekenders, this was the first big trip out of the old Black Wolf Turbo tent. The kids are now 12, 10 and 6, and take a lot more space up in the cab and eat a lot more than they did 3 years ago, so the camper is a welcome addition.

I was nervous leading up to the crossing, as I was not sure quite what to expect with towing, and how challenging it would be. During our crossing we had my parents along in their Partol Ute with Slide-On camper for company and safety, and only had to call on them for a snatch off the top of a dune once, which was a pretty good result. There were two other dunes that I had second or third attempts at, and managed to get over without assistance. We even managed Big Red with the camper still behind.

To give you an idea of timeframes, we left Dalhousie Springs at around 9:30am Good Friday, spent 3 nights in the desert, and arrived at Birdsville by around 2:00pm Easter Monday. Most days we drove from around 8:30am to 3:30 or 4:00pm, with ample time for pitstops and photo moments.

Tyre pressures were adjusted down to 12psi in front and 14psi in the rear, with the camper on 12psi also, and most of the way I used Low Range, 3rd gear, which I found to be the best. Some of it I did in High Range 1st, but 3 Low is a little faster. I definitely think west to east looked easier than the east to west trip, based on the state of the dunes coming from that direction.

Anyway, here are a few trip photos to stimulate your sense of adventure, and if you want to know any particulars about our trip and desert crossing, I will do my best to respond.
