  • Got the D4D blues, Oh what a feeling ;-(

    Hi all,

I'm a first timer here guys so go easy, I know there has been many D4D failures posted on here, but just wanting feedback of any recent failures pls?

Has anyone recently had their D4D destroy itself? Our much loved 120 D4D has let us down, looks like major meltdown, we are waiting for the 120 to be freighted back home from Central Australia thanks to RACQ (takes two weeks, one week to go before we see it) If heading outback makes sure you have RACQ Ultimate cover, worth every cent! She developed a rattly engine while stationary and then the oil pressure light come on, oil level and fluids were spot on and she never got hot. bugger! We were only at the end of week one of a six week adventure, bugger bugger!! ;-(

We have had the 120 from brand new (build date Dec 2008) and its only done 128,000klms, always had servicing done by Toyota and just had a major 40k service before we left ($1,100) its only done 2,500klms since the major service. I think it might be the old blocked oil pickup scenario, I hope I'm wrong, we will find out when we get it back to our Toyota dealer next week.

I wont accept that 128,000klms is the expected life of a D4D engine, has anyone got any feedback regarding trying to get Toyota to warranty an engine failure outside the warranty period? I think we have a pretty good case, low k's and full Toyota service history. It will be interesting to find out if the major services had valve clearances actually checked and adjusted or just the audible test, also if the injector lines were removed for checking the valve clearances, no mention of any injector seals on any of our service invoices. we did have one injector replaced just outside warranty due to failure, we had to pay half the repair bill, I wanted to replace all 4 but Toyota would not cover half the cost of the other three. So until we get the 120 back we just have to wait and see what the problem is,

Very disappointing, Oh what a feeling,.......

    Thanks,

    FDW17

That's a real p.i.t.a for your trip, lucky you had full rac, as any traveller should.
Things seem to have settled down with engine problems, as the facts are spread around, people are taking preventative measures.
If only you knew to replace all 4 Injectors at 120k.

If its the injectors, Toyo they should know better (after 10 years) you don't replace one, they are all worn, so you have at least 3 due. just over 120k is the most common time these are out of spec & sometimes results in a cracked piston.

If its the oil pickup, & it's sounds like it, it will be highly likely they have caused it.
This engine came out with the revised coated injector seats/sheets. The earliest I have ever seen these leak is over 200,000k when never removed.
We have seen them leak straight after 40,80k etc services.
They leak for various obvious reasons, not cleaning the ports out.

They need to be clean like new, to seal like new. Anything less is a guess........
      Clean

This is what they look like after you remove a standard injector

This is what they come out like when you put them in on that mess, or perhaps they clean a little sometimes.

The above engine did a turbo at 60k & big end at 80k, injectors 114k.
It was a 2011 & if left alone it would have never needed any of this work.

See the 3 on the left, clean seats (old style), the right one, the good old replaced 1. See the muck they missed from cleaning, usual stuff people.

The other reasons they leak, or a combination of:
      Re-use the seats/sheets
Over or under torque the injector clamps.

This is how they should look, after a quick clean

How many do I need to show you before everybody understands this is a widespread problem?
Please tell your friends, everyone is connected.

      This can be prevented!!!

        Thanks for the info ####,

I will keep you posted, I'm planning on being at the dealership when they drop the sump and injectors etc, so it will be interesting to see how they react when the problem is diagnosed. Fingers crossed its repairable, I really don't want to go for a reconditioned exchange engine, they are never the same after a rebuild.

Oh dear - another one Anthony. This recurrent problem will invariably happen if you just follows the basic Toyota service manual.

Time for Toyota Australia to recognise they have a real image problem on their hands and to add some cautions in their owners manuals or a really smart dealer would offer an hand over which incorporates some basic information about caring for the D4D.

Following my experience I am going to write up my story and the lessons for my Southern Tablelands Wheel Drive Club magazine.

PS: Dealers could also do themselves a favour by recommending owners join this forum.

####, how about posting up some sump screen shots too? Dec 08 build means last series injectors. Not sure about sheets because there were reports of early 150s with the old sheets. FWD17 (FDW17?) was your car recalled for replacement injector sheets?

Maybe I should get into training TOYOTA dealers, really.......? It would seem you all could tech them a few things too.

They had revised sheets by 01/2008. If copper was ever in 1, it was installed at service using old stock.

Guys I'm gathering info to build my case, I have just checked my Toyota service history and they have used many different oils.
What is the correct oil for a D4D 120 series?

For the record, mine went at 76,000km. Toyota replaced the whole motor, but I didn't have to argue as I had the extended dealer warranty and they took up the fight because they were liable. Mine is a 2009 Grande auto diesel. Apparently Toyota sent out a rep from Japan to inspect the blown motor with a holed and cracked number 1 and cracked number 3. I have them as souvenirs.

Another dodgy member from WA had his go around the same numbers.

Always serviced with one Toyota dealer, always Toyota genuine oils etc.

Likely yours was the injectors cracking pistons, likely slightly different to this one, this is sounding like a blocked oil pickup, likely caused by poor workshop practises. I could be wrong
Can we see some images of those cracked pistons please?
