If you want get up an go, buy the V6 petrol. I went from 120 4.0 v6 to 150 2.8D, now done 12,000kms. Frankly you need to be patient when driving the diesel. It goes fine, tows the boat, comfortable etc. But acceleration and time exposed to danger when passing, no comparison. I'm happy with diesel economy, towing and day to day running. Just have to adjust driving style, open road passing isn't quite as easy.

Have you noticed an improvement in the performance of the diesel since new now that you've done 12000km? Just think when driving the diesel you have less chance of losing your license when over taking. With my old V6 Prado I would be approaching 160+km/h by the time I was back on the correct side of the road.

Diesels do require a different driving technique but having said that I am not that sure they are that much slower than the V6 in the 70-80 to 100-110 range. At this point you are right in the middle of the torque band. It would be interesting to see stopwatch figures. After less than 1000km in my new 2.8 [ie still very tight] it gets up and boogies if you shove your foot right into it in this range. It may be different at overtaking at 110+ but I haven't been there yet.It is miles ahead of my previous 60 ser, GQ Patrol, 80 ser [all petrol]. The 2.8 is slower at lowere speeds, say up to 60 but goes ok if you give it more boot than the V6.

Seat of the pants says it has got better. But it's never going to be a 4.0 v6 petrol. I can remember getting towards 160 kph in my 120, frankly scary, not designed to go that fast in my view, well not with me at the wheel anyway!
I am very happy with the 2.8, it does everything I want. But the v6 would just get up and fly with no hesitation, passing was a breeze, but as 404 pug says, diesels need different driving and I find the 2.8 needs a bit more planning and highway room.

I also hesitated when ordering my new Prado and was very close to going for the V6 (and even a used LC200). I went for the 2.8 in the end since I rarely need the 'sporty' V6 performance but economy is important. My previous car was a Prado (quite quick for a SUV) and I also recently hired a BMW 640d (very quick). Whilst the 2.8 (now at 3500 km) is not sporty I have been pleased with its performance for general driving. Response at higher speeds is a little delayed, but gets up to 110km/h well. I am no engine design expert but the 2.8 is a very complicated engine and I would have concerns about chips impacting longevity and longer term performance (only time can prove this). However, I agree that the engine is tuned rather low compared to other makes. If performance is a major concern then the Prado V6 or LC200 (shame about the high price) might be better options - but I am happy with the 2.8 and it seems to improve with km's. Mine is happy to drop into 5th/6th from 60km/h +. Like most others will comment, a Prado V6 diesel with c.180kw and 600nm torque would be perfect.

Hi. I have a 2016 Prado Kakadu 4 litre and the power and overtaking abilities are awesome. I went petrol as the diesel was just pathetic however the fuel consumption in the petrol Prado is horrendous. This does not worry me that much as it is a leased vehicle but if 16 l/100 worries you (up to 20l/100 when loaded and going into the wind) then the diesel will be the cheaper albeit short term option.

Mid to late last year I was in the market for a new 4WD and owned a 2007 Prado VX 3.0 D4D. I test drove the 3.0 Prado and found it to be sluggish compared to my 2007 Prado. When I say I test drove the 3.0 Prado I'm talking the GXL and Kakadu models. It was like towing a trailer - and low and behold they weigh-in about 300-400 kgs heavier than my 2007 model. I waited to test drive the 2.8 model and found it a little smoother but not the same as the torque I got with my 2007 Prado.

Looked at the Fortuner but for the money why would you buy it and not the Prado?

I looked at the Discovery 4. Both diesel engines variations. The drive was much better than the new Prado and my 2007 model. The engines although with a noticeable turbo lag were more powerful - power and torque. And the suspension/ride silky smooth - much superior to the Prado's. The overall package was much superior. But the question remained - cost of ownership. European cars and especially Land Rover can not compare to the cost of ownership, reliability and dealer network of Toyota.

So what did I do. I went the safe option and bought a 2.8 Prado GXL. But every time I see a Discovery I think to myself that if money wasn't a factor I'd be driving one now.

ive got almost 20k on my 2.8. I towed 3.5t 2500kms at around the 10k mark, after that it really opened up, I was very surprised just how well it handled pulling the big trailer up hills through the pilbara. It held on longer than my v6 120 used to and used 18l/100 with headwinds and working very hard. Mine is manual and a hilux.

Anyone installed a chip yet? Or 'have a mate' who has, but doesn't want to comment on a public forum for fear of voiding warranty...
