  • Matson MA20DCS DC/DC Charger with solar input

Supercheap Auto sells these at about $335.00 but I found it on sale for $249.50 at OZ Auto Electrics here:
    http://www.ozautoelectrics.com/matso...lar-input.html
I haven't found a review of one but decided to give it a try anyway at this price.
Not sure if anyone else might be interested but thought I'd post it up just in case.
I also found it cheaper again here:
    https://www.batteriesdirect.com.au/s...0/ma20dcs.html
but they are out of stock.

    Hi Rich
How did you find this unit? Does it do the job? Any problems?

I have a couple of bits of Matson kit and they are generally good stuff.

I note the line in the manual "Note - once the main cranking battery falls below 12.3V, the charger automatically switches off". Depending on your application, this may be an issue.

I have a camper trailer with a DC-DC charger mounted in it, and a new 150 series Prado. The Prado has a "smart alternator" which should be re-named "PITA alternator" as it generally sits at 13.4 - 13.6V and there is no way to adjust it.

For my setup, I have heavy cable (6 AWG/B&S) from the cranking battery through to the towball, then anderson plug and same cable to the DC-DC. When the DC-DC is operating (I have a Projecta IDC25), it has 30A flowing down it which means around 1 - 1.2V drop across the cable. So with the smart alternator, 13.4V - 1.2 V = 12.2V at the DC-DC - so if the DC-DC has a 12.3V turn off setting, it will turn off!!

Even with the DC-DC I have, which has a low voltage cut-off setting of 11.9V, sometimes if I start my car and only idle the engine the voltage can sag to below 11.9V as the alternator recognises the load and kicks it back up - but too late the Dc-Dc has disconnected! So I either rev the engine till it comes on or use the idle up button.

Sorry for the long winded response, and I realise my setup doesn't use the Matson, but figure it is something worth considering.

I had one of these, went fine until I increased the size of the camper batteries, went from 120ah to 250ah.
        Melted big time.
It was fitted with an in-line fuse, purple colour so I think 35amp, hard to tell from the mess of melted plastic. Must have been boiling away there for hours.
        My fault, didn't think……..

I'm really happy my Matson MA20DCS. I installed a dual voltmeter at the same time and while the car is running the voltage from my main battery is always above the 12.2 volts so the DC-DC is always on when the car is running. The voltage on the Aux battery is at 14.7 when in charge mode and 13.8 in float mode. So it's exactly what the spec sheet says. The other cool feature is the Solar input. I haven't used it in anger yet but I purchased the 160 Watt Kings panel to keep the battery topped up if I'm camped for a while. The only downside is that the MA20DCS is slightly larger than Redarc ones and I had to make up an adapter plate to mount it on a bracket made for a redarc one. In my opinion the cost saving was worth it!

Why would increasing the battery bank melt it? Perhaps the in-line fuse was the problem.

I've seen the result of failure of those cheap in-line fuses that fail - the low quality units introduce a high resistance to the circuit, heat up and melt - all at less amperage than the fuse that is there to protect the circuit!
            Cheers
            Micheal.

Yeah, automotive blade fuses are generally no good for continuous 20A. I melted one on my redarc BCDC1220. Ended up using a maxi fuse holder with a 20A element.

Batteries direct have the Matson MA20DCS back in stock now at $235.00. Click the link in the above quote.
I mounted mine using a universal bracket from Off Road Downunder. I had to make up an adapter plate though as the Matson is just that bit bigger than the redarc.

No idea, the spec sheet said suitable for 18 to 250ah battery, but it might be a stretch?
I pulled it apart, replaced the melted wires and gave her a test.
12V goes in but nothing comes out, she's cactus. Nothing obvious cooked inside.
