So just got a text from some friends - bought a new Prado 2.8D auto 2 months ago, and set off on a trip form Perth to Kimberly and back. Heard they had problems so asked what was up:

"We had a problem with the DPF. It's a filter for the exhaust fumes. It's supposed to regenerate as you drive along. Apparently it's been redesigned for 2017 with tighter environmental constraints. But they have had a number of people having our issue. We got a 'go to dealership immediately' warning light. Then the electronics in the car started to gradually limit our driving speed.
We had to limp back an hour to Toyota Carnarvon. (At least we weren't on the Gibb!!). They told us they have a memo on the issue but there are no spare parts in Australia for at least 2 weeks! After many calls and discussions, they managed to do a forced regeneration 'burn off' to unclog the filter and get us on our way. The pre-error light did come back on after about another 500k, but we finally got home at 2am! Now time to join the queue for a new filter!"

A real worry! In a week I'm heading off with the family from Perth to Alice via the central highway - hoping we don't have the same problem (ours is a manual, 1 year old with 9000 km). Recently did a trip 200 km north with the camper trailer and averaged 15L /100 km - not steller, and I'm hoping isn't an indication of a block DPF....

Called dealer and spoke to their "tech expert" (who was actually pretty good). He reckons it is rare - said they have seen 5 Hilux and one Fortunas with it but no Prados. Said some of the Hilux are fleet vehicles, and were driven with the warning light on for a month before they could be brought in for repair.

Confirmed that the vehicle measures differential pressure across the DPF, the "range" for normal use is 0 - 100%, light comes on at 120% and engine de-rating/limiting kicks in at 180% (my friends said the electronics in the car started to gradually limit their driving speed).

Fix is new DPF (same design, just replacement of duff/damaged one) and change/upgrade to software. I asked if I could get the software upgrade to ours, bet he said they only do it when doing the repair (is paid by Toyota as part of the warranty claim), as they need to re-calibrate the system when they put the new DPF in.

Friends said the dealer in Carnarvon did a forced regen, then they set off for Perth - the pre-error light did come back on after about another 500 km. My friends have confirmed that they are driving around with the car now back in Perth waiting for the parts to arrive (replacement DPF) from China. None in Australia right now - wonder if Toyota are having a run on them......

.... or if the product is not "fit for purpose" as required under the Trade Practises Act? hmmm

Just booked in for a service - was told that the system came up automatically with an ECU upgrade to be done. I was going to ask for the DPF software upgrade anyway, and the guy told me that was what the ECU upgrade was for.

So it sounds like Toyota have worked out the problem and are trying to fix it (I suppose because it is costing them money).

Haven't driven the car enough to work out if it has made much difference.

DPF from China? Maybe the China factory was supplying out-of-spec DPFs. Pure conjecture on my part there, but a serious question now: Since when did Toyota genuine components come out of China?

I know oil filters for the 200 Series (and presumably the 150 Series) come out from a Toyota factory in Thailand but air filters are still ex-Japan. But DPFs are major components - I would have assumed such major components are designed and manufactured by Toyota in Japan.

I'm interested if others notice an ECU upgrade with their next service.

I think the ECM recall thread covers this. Being a formal recall I expect that it would be a mandatory change. I have had mine done and running better for it.
