  • Rattle in tailgate in our 150

We have just finished a very hard 14,000 trip including the Savannah Way in NT from Burketown to Roper Bar, right along the bottom of the Gulf.
The corrugations and bull dusts holes were atrocious and we have a legacy of a thudding sort rattle in the area around the tailgate latch on the left side.
Our beaut car has 70,000 kms and was as tight as a drum prior to the trip.
Is there history of this type damage, is the adjustment easy or is the wedge that seems to be the main component in holding everything in place readily replaceable?

    Hi Bilgolabands,
I'm not really sure if anyone can reasonably reply with any useful information as no one has any idea idea exactly what model prado you have...GX, GXL, altitude, diesel, petrol etc etc.
Perhaps that info might be useful...because there may be some variation in the tailgate set up....I recon it will be best o take it back to a dealer for advice i guess....but perhaps someone has had a similar issue?
    good luck.

Thanks, I though all the tailgates were the same, apart from the spare wheel less Altitude model.
Our vehicle is a 2011 150 diesel GXL.
Noise was today isolated to the tailgate by ARB Brookvale, most helpful and professional.

I had a Dec 2010 GXL D4D auto Prado, and was fortunate enough to not have a problem with tailgate rattle. Some rattles in the tailgate that have been reported include spanners in the tool kit (so pull that out temporarily), the spare wheel (so take the cover and spare wheel off temporarily), the door latch adjustment striker plate, (which might need to be adjusted so the door closes firmly onto it, and the rear door strut, which can rattle due to loose "ball joint" type connection....(wrap it in a cloth and carefully close the door or remove the darn thing temporarily to see if that's the cause...and the rear door upper spoiler itself can rattle apparently ...(there are two securing bolts behind two rubber grommet plugs (you could have a go at tightening that I guess)....and someone had a rattling number plate surround on the rear door....You probably need to go to a large car park and climb in the back area of the Prado and drive around and around and over speed bumps listening and pushing and poking to try and isolate the rattle....let us know how you go.

Hi, I had a very similar and annoying rattle in the back of my Prado, took me a while to locate it after I was certain it was my Tailgate as well.
turns out the noise was coming from inside the RHR quarter panel area, there is a module held to the inside of the body by 2x 10mm bolts.
I found that where this bracket mounted to the body had cracked the captive nuts and was flexing causing it to rattle.

I relocated the module to another spot in the same area and Presto.....fixed! I did take some photos, I will have to find them.

                Brogers,
A big thank you to you as well for your many opportunities to investigate what is really beginning to annoy me.

Mine developed a bad rattle that turned out to be the little bolts that attach the spoiler. They have a square head that slots into a groove and this had worn after a trip with 100's of km of very bad corrugations. Thought I could tighten the bolts but they were already tight so I removed the bolts, put sikaflex on slotted parts and refitted them. No more rattle. From memory there are 6? Also the bit of plastic on the right of the rear wiper also gets a good rattle up.

I have just about had a gut full of the rattle in my rear door. I have isolated it to the top right mounting bolt of the spare wheel carrier. I can replicate the noise by removing the carrier and pushing the bolt back and forward sideways. The nut behind it is still attached to the frame but there seems to be some movement between the inner and outer skin of the door. The rattle can also be replicated by hitting the spare tyre on the right hand side with my fist. So if anyone still has a mystery rattle that they haven’t been able to resolve this just might be the problem. I think I need to take it to a panel beater to see if they can do anything.
