  • Firmware update for 6spd Gearbox

    Hi Guys,

If any of you are struggling with the gearbox behaving badly there is a firmware update coming that should fix most things. I have already received a firmware update that is pre this one and I have noticed my gearbox is much more relaxed and holds gears much better and doesn't seem to have the clunk when changing gears. The next firmware should fix the flaring between 2nd and 3rd people are reporting. Hoping it might behave nicer when towing the caravan.

    Thanks
    Doug

Mine is a Jan 2016 build so might already be on a later firmware and is not perfect, but not too bad on gear choices. I would be interested in the new firmware version and how it works out for you (I once had a firmware update on a Kluger that made a major improvement in engine and gearbox processing)

Mine was a Jan build also. I was explained the new firmware will likely fix the clunking issue. It won't fix the six gear torque converter over sensitivity problem I am seeing. Fingers crossed it improves some of the transmission problems though.

Let us know when the update is released Doug, my dealer knows nothing as of yet...

Incidentally, did they check your fluid level? (reports of low fluid from the factory)
Not sure though if low fluid would effect the smoothness of shifts or flaring unless it was very low on oil.
            Cheers

Apparently they are supposed to at 10k service. So yes they should have. I have been monitoring trans temps and have not seen any greater than 104 deg even towing so should indicate levels are correct. I might need to post a YouTube vid showing the 6th gear issue for others to compare.

The firmware update was installed today on my vehicle. It has been released you just need to ask your dealership. Hard to say how different it is though I have noticed it seems smoother through the first few gears and seems to not revs its pants off under full acceleration changing gear sooner than later. Will have a better idea of improvements in about a week or so. Dealership seems very helpful to resolve problem and are keen to hear feedback and if further investigation is needed they are happy to continue.

I have noticed a slight jolt when the gearbox is cold and I am braking down downhill at slow speeds, where the gearbox helps out braking by dropping a gear (from 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st). Is the firmware meant to fix this?

Only picked mine up last week but have noticed the downshifting you have mentioned. Also 6th seems difficult to get the TC to lock in and very easy for it to unlock. Would be nice if it stayed locked in 6th a bit longer. I haven't had a chance to throw the scan gauge in yet to look at temps yet.

UPDATE: Seems to be holding the torque converter lock for longer. Have compared the same hill I frequently use before and after and definitely better after upgrade.

Another update: Fuel efficiency has improved. I managed 6.7l/100km from Osborne Park to Leeming. Didn't lose torque converter lockup at all while on freeway. Noticed transmission temp was only getting to mid 60's which is far lower than previous of 80 deg (note: These temps are with a trans cooler fitted).

I find mine struggling to switch to 3rd gear at around 60km/h - I have to push it up to about 65-70, then it switches and then I can drop down to 60 and it stays nice and put. Is there a way to check the current firmware version on the car somehow? Will give my dealership a call tomorrow, but would love to check that they've actually updated something

Thanks Cuda for being an early tester of the new firmware. I think I will ask for the upgrade at my next service (my dealer tends not to change firmware unless problems raised, specifically requested or forced by Toyota, which is fair enough)
