  • Very slow start

    Hi All,

    about three weeks ago my 2012 Prado 150 began starting really slowly when it was first started in the morning. When I talk slow, I could count to about fifteen between pressing the start button and the engine turning over. There is a click when I first press the button, then nothing, then the engine turns over and starts. The engine hasn't failed to start, just wondering if anyone else has had this, and might be able to suggest if I can fix it, need someone else to fix it, or it is not an issue.

    Thanks,
    Rich

    Almost sounds like the glow plugs? With mine I find that it takes a second or 2 longer on cold cold mornings to warm up the plugs. Watch the plug light on the dash and see when it turns off

      Could be starter motor contacts gummed up / wet / dirty.. Same thing happened to ours a week after getting hung up in a puddle. After hitting the button, it would click, then wait a few seconds, then a slow turn (flat battery kind of sound), then it would turn over happily.

      Progressively got worse until it wouldn't start every few times and threw crank angle sensor warnings. We just replaced the starter motor and now it's back to normal. I believe it can be stripped and cleaned out as-well.

        Thanks

        Thanks for the reply, I will have a look at it in the morning to see what happens with the light when I first start it up.

        If I can't see any delay or issue with the light, I will have a look at the starter motor.

        Thanks again for the replies.

          I had starter motor issues once too. What wound happen is I would have to attempt a start maybe 5 times and then it would start normally. From what im reading you only press it once, then it starts 15 seconds later? Does it crank at normal speed?

            Hi, yes it cranks a bit slowly at first, then kicks over. COuld that mean it is something else?

            Thanks

              Maybe your battery is on the way out too

                Mine just started doing the same thing recently and this morning wouldn't start at all. Through the same error code too so I'll try to strip the starter motor tonight and give it a clean.
                It has seen a lot of water recently so I believe that would be the culprit.

                  Its clearly a daylight saving issue - try driving north or south and see if it sorts out :-}
