  • Rust proofing

    Hi guys,

I have a 2013 prado which has never been on the beach. Planning a trip to camp at Bribie Island and was wondering if rust proofing is really required? is it necessary? if so what sort do you recommend? and around how much am I expected to fork out for it?

    thanks in advance guys!

    Juan,

As a minimum, give it a very good flush with water when you get back. Through the chassis rails, underneath, in the wheel arches - anywhere you think the sand and salty water will reside.

At 8 yrs mine is still going rust free at this stage.
    Greg - 08 D4D Prado,
Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.

Been on beach to Bribie, Fraser, Straddy, Moreton....multiple times....no rust proofing or electronic rust proof device...but I do avoid driving through salt water wherever possible...and I always wash it thoroughly, through chassis rails, and a good clean from the roof down. I use CT18...as its fairly neutral, and always rinse with plenty of fresh water....and I've never had any rust in 5 years with previous Prado, and so far nothing on the new Prado...Personally I wouldn't bother with rust proofing now on a second hand car...as there will already by quite a bit of dirt and road grime under the car, and any coating will only cover that...and I'm not convinced about electronic rust proofing...a good wash is the go I recon.

Thanks guys, it sounds like for the amount of sand driving I will be doing (1 or 2 times a year)rust proofing is not required as long as it gets a good wash after. I appreciate your input.

Im in the same boat. I didn't think I would go on the beach that much, but Ive now done Bribie Island 4 times in the past 3 months!!

Ive taken on the advice about the electronic rust proofing, so Im looking at the undercarriage coating.

Anyone got any recommendations to get this done in Brisbane?

Even the government has had it's say but they keep selling them anyway. https://www.finance.nsw.gov.au/about...uction-devices.

But I think the spray-on sealants may work if they're washed down after exposure to salt.

Does anyone know of a place in or around Sydney that applies the stuff? Preferably the the coatings like http://costeffective.com.au/product/...stop-rust-now/

I've asked the supplier but they don't know of anyone in Sydney that does it.

David Fletcher from All Insured Rustproofing did my 2010 Prado when new. 0412 222 229 or 95262213 - Caringbah area.

Came to my home and applied it out the front in the street. Don't know if he is still there, no complaints though. Took about 2 hours to complete, watched him at various times and he appeared to be doing a thorough job.

Did he put it up on ramps? Quite a job laying under it spraying stuff around.

I'm thinking of buying a $40 underbody spray gun from ebay and giving it a shot but I really need to get it up in the air.

No ramps. He was happy to work under it, said he had enough room to move about. He wore goggles to protect the eyes, and overalls.
