Do you include the reserve fuel in this calculation?

I filled up from the Empty marker on both tanks to full on both tanks. The specs say that both tanks together hold 159L and running them back down to the empty marker I got about 800KMs so I guess that would equal 19.9/100kms if you don't count the reserve which someone above said is 20L in each? I don't remember how many litres I filled up with at the pump. Will keep an eye next time I fill up.

Run a tank down until it snuffs once when it runs out of fuel then switch to the other tank. Make sure the other tank is no more than half full at the time as up to 1/8th of the main tank will flow over to the sub tank if the main is full during normal driving and cornering.

Put in a round number of litres when refilling, say 50 litres for example. Drive on that tank until it snuffs again when it runs out of fuel. I think the main tank still has up to 15 litres of unusable fuel left in it when it officially runs out of usable petrol. So thinking you've used all or close to 159 litres when you run both tanks down until the fuel light comes on for both tanks is unreliable and incorrect. It's probably more like 135 to 140 litres that you've only used give or take. You can google km's per hundred calculators and plenty of websites pop up where you enter litres of fuel used and km's driven and it calculates litres per hundred usage. Do that test a few times with your car and you've got a reliable fuel usage count. Hwy driving tends to use 2-3L per hundred less on average than city driving.

mine in general gets close to a 1000 km around town. . The worst is 850 but in general around town and a little motorway its just under 1000km.

I have a 1999 auto . i keep it clean and accelerate with out o many exaggerations at the lights. I find my better fuel economy is with the e10 fuel from united. I would of imagined and had to prove to myself repeatedly but its true . the e10 from united gives me better economy than 98 in any other servo , inclueding mobil, shell, bp, caltex... I have read somewhere else that a guy stated this and i thought he was talking crap . He used caltex e10 .

I'm not convinced its a good idea to use e10 fuels but if the economy is better the combustion must also be. ...
I do not get it totally as i said i would not believe it if i hadnt done it myself repetitively.

next i may try changing the exhaust . although i havent really found anyone convincingly say , by doing that it actually changes economy . I think it may stop that vibration at 110 kmph but better performance , dunno . The extractors idea may be a good one . dunno , just dabbling on the idea...

Any other ideas to economize. A friend told me to fit an aftermarket turbo , also is another one that i would wonder its worth at the end of the day.

Just returned from a trip from Harvey bay to Yepoon and back down to gold coast .The two full tanks 1200 km. All highway driving generally sticking to speed limits.
Tyre pressure is 40 psi. I think the old girl is running as well as a standard old bus can run with 250k on the clock.
I will fill up tomorrow to say how many liters consumed .

I also have been a convert to United e10 for quite a while now. Used to get an extra 100km out of a tank in the old commodore and use it in both prados now and definitely get better economy out of it than any other options I've tried. Must admit I've never tried either on 98. Just couldn't convince myself the extra 15c/l was worth it. And good to see you've lost the "lurker" tag.

Yes finally out of the lurker mode

Yes i have noticed similar with my prado. I dont get it . Supposedly the e10 is less emit ions but less octane. so less combustion . It should be less klm.
I have noticed that sometimes when the engine is cold it gets a little smokey . But then it goes in a minute. I have put that down to the e fuel.
Anyway i filled up and used 150 liters for the 1200 klm trip , giving the calculation 12.50 per 100klm.

prior to this prado i had an extrail petrol . it would use 9.50 on highway runs.
the difference clearly is the weight , the xtrail 1437kg (tare)
                the prado 2390kgs
over all just the weight factor says it all .
Also just had a run on frazer . my bro was there also with a TD navara 3 liter , the prado used 30 % more fuel than the navara TD. with 1509 kg
So once again we are lugging quite a bit more weight than many .
so over all im happy with the results.

United E10 is 95 octane whereas most if not all the others are 91.

What year x-trail?! We have one that does the ADL Melbourne run a lot. Always pulls around 6.5-7 on hwy runs. ADL-Mel and back to Ballarat easily on a tank.

E10 is regular unleaded petrol blended with between 9% and 10% ethanol..The ethanol is suppose to clean out injectors as it works as a solvent cleaning the system , but recommended changing the fuel filter more frequently.

I guess regular petrol is 91/95 and 98 for high compression engines.

Thanks for the heads up Piggy. I have edited my figures about the xtrail . I was 10.50 /11 around town and 9.50 per 100 klm on highway runs.I could never get better .It ran as smooth as .
                      It was a 2002 .

                      Yours runs very nicely indeed...

Last week i filled up and i used 145 ltr.
all driving around town and i got 1045 klm.
using 95 fuel that gives me a calculation around town of 14 ltr per 100 klm.
once again i think its as good as it gets with a standard 5VZ-FE prado 90 series.
Standard has a lot less weight say from not having a bull bar , winch , higher profile tyres ect, ect, ect
I guess that is the differences between many calculations . Even exhaust changes seem to help it run better , smoother, but not really helping with fuel .

I wonder if a high octane additive changes things, or even if its a safe idea?. I may try it for the next tanks.

So is the 10% ethanol safe for the 90 series for long term use? I've always wondered. The only reason I ask is because when I entered my registration number on the government E10 OK website it doesn't give me an answer, so I don't think they know.

I dont really know , I found it a little smokey on start up at times . Im waiting to see if i spot smoke using 95 fuels for a while.
So is it the fuel or is it that mine is a little smokey. We shall see.

If the economy is better than the standard 91 Ron unleaded as some people are saying then I'd like to use it, but just have reservations at present.
