  • Engine knock/rattle between 1800-2200rpm

    Most noticeable when engine is cold. Between 1800-2200rpm it sounds like someone has set the valve clearances to about 100thou! It does get better when the engine warms up but the 'rattle' is definitely still there. And it seems to be getting worse! Engine had 130,000km on it and original injectors as far as I know. Any ideas?

    The main difference in these pics is the engine temp.

    Injector values are okay but the injection volume is high, ideally it should be under 10 when warm, mine runs mid 7s. Your idle is up too. Are all accessories off?. My auto idles at 725rpm.

      Daves the guru!

      Injectors flogged, get a brand new set.

      Dave see feedback for idle, that is also high & load is very high.

      This is why I say change at 120k, also feedbacks don't always go out.
      Other specs do. You just know about 120k they're shagged. New ones might last longer.

      Knocks are usually injectors or compression differences between cylinders.

        I was kinda thinking you'd say that! $hit!

        Just have to find someone on the Gold Coast who knows what they're doing to get them changed now. I am coming to Melbourne in December but that might be a little too long as I reckon they've gotten worse in the last two weeks!

        What do you mean when you say the 'load' is very high ####? Are you referring to the "Calculate load" figure"? And if so, what is that?

          Sorry, but you will love it afterwards.

          Yes, Normal is around 12-13 or so even 14. Yours is out.
          Many parameters to watch & if they're out many are because injectors are shagged.

            since this has a screen shot of the tech stream up can you tell us all the items we need to look at and the values they should be
            what is normal what is close what is way out

            if possible

              Glad you added the last line, mate!

              Man there's a lot of Data & it's different at different temps & revs.

              The important ones are. Lets talk hot.
              Injection volume 5-12mm ideal 5-8-9
              Feedback for idle + or - 4. Typical 1-2 ish
              Load will be 12-14
              Maf 5-12 depending if 7mm plate. Then 12-16 (just noticed that maf is way high) clean & re test.
              Feedbacks 1 to 4 + or -3, if it has a 2 watch it closely.
              Main injection period 510-710 about 600 & jumps a bit.
              Also pilot timing & duration but it will get too complicated to write.

              That will keep u busy.

                Injectors being replaced in a week or so (hopefully it holds together that long!), will do the EGR plate while I'm at it. Just what I need before Christmas! $$$$

                Appreciate the info provided above. Will post the results of the new injectors in a couple of weeks.

                  Just throwing it out there, had my injectors done late last year and whilst the very noticeable engine rattle is gone, it's still pretty rattley first thing in the morning. Wondering if this is normal. Almost sounds like a tappet rattle that dissipates as it warms up.

                    A couple of Questions: How many kms have you done, have you had the timing belt done yet, and what engine oil are you using?

                      It has 140,000km on it, I'm using Castrol Magnatech 15W40 and I doubt the timing belt has been done. We bought it second hand.

                        Mine is the same and has been from new - bad rattle when accelerating between about 1800 & 2500 when cold. Nowhere near as bad after a few minutes when it warms up. It's been back to Toyota to get the injectors checked and they say everything is fine...
