  • 3 tonne towing capacity upgrade

    Hi guys,

I've just been in the market for an off road caravan that sleeps 2 adults and 2 kids and once you start doing figures there doesn't seem to be to many vans around (please if there is I would love to know!!!) that come in under 2.5 tonne. So I have done some research and there is a company near Newcastle that upgrades your suspension to make the tow capacity 3 tonne on a 150 gxl and gx Prado and the ball weight 300kgs, has anyone done this upgrade? Does it ride rubbish? And can the Prado handle it in real world off roading and general use.
    Cheers

Did you ask this company what the upgrade will do to your GVM and GCM?

Yeah no change to Gvm it's just a tow rating change and can only be done with gx and gxl

If GVM remains the same the GCM must increase?

I'm interested in seeing the detail on this.
          Cheers

I found this on the website link provided below.
Increase of GCM increase from 5490kg to 5990kg, Increase in towing capacity from 2,500 to 3,000kg, and increase in ball weight capacity from 250kg to 300kg
Looks like you need a factory Toyota tow bar, and they upgrade the suspension with bilstein shocks, king springs and polyair airbags...but all I've done is read the website

                http://climaxsuspension.com.au/gvmprado150.php

....but.....it also says on the website "Note that towing upgrades only apply in NSW"
I'm not sure what that statement means exactly.
Note that Towing Upgrades currently only apply in NSW *

It means it is not legal in Qld!

I stand corrected. Legal if registered in NSW, different to what I was told by an automotive engineer.

As far as I am aware the upgrade will be legal australia wide as long as the car is registered in NSW

this is correct. we can only upgrade NSW registered vehicles but as long as the vehicle remains registered in NSW then the vehicle is covered Australia wide!

It can't be correct that you have to have a Toyota factory bar ?
I have fitted a Haymen Reece tow hitch/bar which is rated at 3000kg towing and 300kg ball weight (and a lifetime warranty!) with a sticker stating that.

Whilst it may say that on your towbar, its the car its connected to that's the issue.

Obviously Climax will certify the Toyota factory towing system to 3000kg with the upgraded suspension based on their testing. They wont necessarily go out and test every towbar available on the market. I'm saying the Hayman Rheece system wont pass but you need to find someone to pass it.

we have done testing on both factory and hayman and reese tow bars so that is not an issue for the 150 series. the 120 series prados we fit a hayman and reese tow bar as part of the kit.
