      With a tiny 4 cylinder motor, i would strongly suggest not towing a caravan at all, especially 3 tonne, get a landcruiser for that. Prado motor wont last long towing anything.

        Perhaps a few thousand people on here may have a different view re. Towing and engine life? You are right though about towing heavy stuff. Don't forget that there is a $30000-40000 price difference as well. The current 150 has more power and torque than the hallowed 100 series so horses for courses.

          There have been huge changes in engine technology over the last 100 years. A 1.4 litre engine now makes more torque and power than a 8 litre Rolls Engine from the early 1900s. 4 cylinder engines are used in light trucks. Your statement is a huge over-simplification and doesn't show much insight into how ICEs work.

            Really that's why there is multiple engines are shitting themselves early.
            I do own trucks also.
            ​​​​​​If I was going to tow a caravan I would definitely want more power bigger motor to do job easier, simple facts.

              The real reason they keep making engines smaller is to keep Greenies happy and dumb fuel economy sales pitches, honestly why would they go from a 3.0 to a 2.8 L with a stupid dpf burner, what a disaster.
              Same with trucks Dpf burners and add Blue it's nothing but unreliable rubbish.

                Strong words TT. I'm very happy with my Prado 150 2.8 L with DPF and 6-speed auto transmission. And compared with my mate's Prado 150 3.0 L with no DPF and 5-speed auto transmission, mine is more powerful, quieter, more reliable and has better fuel economy. We both tow caravans of around 2.5 tonnes ATM and mine wins there too.

                    Well as it is proven that diesel engine exhaust is carcinogenic I have zero issues with the use of DPF's to reduce the risks.
                    As to a DPF costing me, 5 years in and zero issues with my DPF, one cannot keep living in the past.
                    Old school diesels had there good points and also negative issues as well, having worked on engines for well over 40 years I am under no illusions that old mechanical injection engines are the best ever.

                      In trucks dpf is a nightmare, in any vehicle it is, as for living in the past we are a small country.
                      dpf and add blue were forced on us you can't seriously say if you had the choice to have dpf or not that you would choose to have it seriously. Unless you are a tree hugger.

                        You are living in the past and saying DPF's on trucks are a nightmare is essentially incorrect and probably based on supposition and fear of technology.

                        Look around, you see far fewer broken down trucks and cars on the side of the road these days compared to the "good old days" of mechanical injection and carb engines and there is far more vehicles on the road today than in yesteryear.
                        The facts are modern vehicles are more reliable, safer and all round better for the world we live in than the old black smoke blowing trucks of the past.

                        And yes I think that "burning coal" is pure bs.

                          I'm coming from a science and engineering perspective on how internal combustion engines work, that's how the engines that you like were designed and how new ones are also designed. You are entitled to your opinions, just be be clear that there is a big difference between an opinion and a fact..

                            No trucks are not more reliable with dpf.
                            Take Isuzu f series for example.
                            They had that many complaints about dpf google it. They ended up making a FXD model that has no dpf or adblue, bigger turbo solves this problem, so because concrete trucks and mining trucks couldn't pull over anywhere randomly and do a manual burn for 20 mins. These dpf systems would start clogging up at only 80000kms. And if drivers ignored manual burn the truck would shut down and would need towing. Mechanical injection was definitely better for injection and less costly. Hiluxes had dpf recalls. Ask any truck mechanic, they will all say dpf and adblue is rubbish.

                              Very abrasive attitude for a new member TT. Perhaps it's raining in your part of the world.

                              Toyota seem to be pretty confident with their DPFs, admittedly upgraded since their original release in 2015. They wrote to me, extending the warranty of all DPF related parts and labour from 3 to 10 years.
