  • Recently bought an '08 GXL KDJ120R - Injectors and other stuff!

Hi all. First post - hopefully more will come!

I recently bought a 2008 diesel GXL. It's got high kms, but has been kept in pretty good nick. Interior is excellent, body is straight, lots of factory options, and it hasn't done much off-roading. However, it does have a few mechanical issues. Firstly, injectors (which I suspected when I purchased, and negotiated the price down a bit as such). It also needs new steering tie ends (both sides), a new cv boot on left side (although mechanic recommended to just replace that axle completely), and new bushings in control arms

I understand that the acceptable range for injectors is between -2 and 2, with 0 being perfect. My readings are -2.66, 1.41, 0.94, 0.16 (when engine was hot). Should I be avoiding driving the car at all costs until replacing the injectors? If driving, what driving style will put the least strain on the injectors? (high rpm low load, low rpm high load, just limping it around?) I plan on getting the injectors sorted sooner rather than later.

A very reputable (but also likely quite expensive) mechanic has quoted $3150 to replace all 4 injectors. I haven't yet called around to see what other mechanics would quote. Whilst I like spending less money where possible, I also like peace of mind. But is this in the ball park of reasonable? (I'm not saying it isn't- i am just saying I don't know what the ball park is! I decided to buy the car knowing that it'd cost at most $3150 to replace them... but less would be good too)

What else should I get done along with the injectors? I.e., what can I "save" money on by doing at the same time? Is it worth doing the timing belt (and other belts), and effectively doing everything while the engine is apart, or does swapping out the injectors not go very close to the belts?

I am sure the mechanic is aware of all the other issues that come along with injector issues, but I will ask them to check the following anyway: Oil pickup mesh, crud in the intake from EGR, is there anything else I should look out for?

    Thanks in advance!

You can't tell how the Injectors are by 4 Individual feedbacks alone.
    How mank Klm's?

$3150 is good if that includes new injectors, egr clean, 7mm flow reduction, new fuel pipes, compression test, valve clearance check, visual of pistons with camera, all new genuine parts.seals & gaskets & job being done as good or better than factory. Torqued to spec.

I have seen Invoices for 3k for Injectors & labour, no pipes. (risky)
The above can be up to $3700.00 to get it done right.
It takes Time do do it right, do it right the first time. Generally time is $$$.

243k kms. Mechanic said injectors based on the readouts and from the sound (which seems to my untrained ear to be quite subtle, but there). And by the fact that "injectors commonly fail" on this engine (again, from research on here and mechanic's word).

I am not sure about those other bits and pieces, but it sounds like they're all worth while to do at the same time. As mentioned, mechanic has a very good reputation (and I am sure the price tag that matches)

If they are original injectors, lucky so far, get them out.
They may have been changed before.
        What's the total volume?
        Feedback for idle?
        Load?
        Timing?
        Duration?
Full diagnostic will tell us if they are any good.

Yes you do it all at the same time & $3150 is good price, not exe. Hundreds more is ok too. Top out about $3700.00.
If it was just new genuine Injectors installed & none of the other stuff you looking at about $2430.00 (budget job).
I highly recommend sticking to Toyota correct procedure, (not how dealers do it, how the book says) new Injectors new pipes, about $2750.00.
So IMO the $3000.00 (no pipes or tests) I have seen on many invoices is exe.
At those klms We recommend changing the Scv that will add about $450 fitted for a genuine Toyota upgraded one.
About $3600.00 is good & fair.
Don't use the DENSO scv for alf the price, you will just be doing it again one day.

A lot of what you had in there is over my head, but I will ask mechanic about it. From the quote, I think it's just injectors + labour + about $100 odd worth of seals/other stuff. I will ask him about the extras, and if it creeps up much past your numbers, I will shop around.

What is a Scv? --> Google - suction control valve. Okay, i saw that in some of the other "what to change" posts on the forum.

          Cheers for the input

Give your local Toyota dealer a call. Their service department will be able to tell you whether your particular vehicle has been in to have the injector seats replaced under a recall... have your VIN handy. If it hasn't been done, great, you save $$$. Get yourself a set of new injectors - fish around for quotes. There are a couple of threads in here relating to KDJ120 and KDJ150 D4D injectors, etc. Toyota will install your new injectors with a labour cost of ZERO as they have to replace the injector seats on all injectors. The recall goes back to January 2015 and there are still many D4D's going around that have not been rectified.

They will probably want you to bring your vehicle in the night before, as the injector readings need to be done when the engine is stone cold, which for them is first thing next morning. If they find the readings out of spec, they will tell you so and also recommend the injectors be replaced anyways, so be prepared.

That customer service exercise is on 06&07's not 08's they had revised washers.

I saw a letter with the VINs for recall, mine was out of the ranges. So I will call Toyota anyway, but am expecting that the answer is 'not required'.
