  • Check engine light frustration

Hi have an issue with my 98 5vz-fe dual fuel . First fault code was only Code 55 (no signal to ecu for crank revolutions between 1800-5600rpm- *open short in knock sensor circuit*knock sensor may be loose *ecu) replaced both knock sensors with new units also replaced bottom harness and did continuity checks from top hatness to escu no problem with wiring , next replaced ECU. Still the same . Did another codes check now code 55 & a new code of 42 came back , ( sensor signal to ecu for 8+ seconds when 1800-3500eng rpm or coolant temp 80 degC, *open or short in vehicle speed sensor circuit*vehicle speed sensor curcuit* ECU)
After replacing with two new knock sensors plus replaced the bottom harness with a new unit from Japan, and replaced the ECU. I now still have the old 55 code and a new fault code of 42 ???
Car drives ok but once it warms up the check engine light still comes on after temp gage moves to normal running temp and revs hit around 3,000rpm whilst driving. If i stop and turn off the engine and start up again the light stays off as long as i dont drive and rev over 3,000rpms. I tried putting two bottles of lifter quiet in over the weekend and that helped slightly with the lifter noise but has not resolved the other issues with the check engine light. Fuel economy is crap and it runs ok until i need to drive on any moderate to steep grade, when it has nxt to no power.
Have a very good mate that is an engine rebuilder who is keen to help me solve this problem. But we just need some direction in what could be the cause ... We have done new knock sensors new harness, wiring harness tested and replaced ECU ...
I hope some one can clue us in on what next to look at, for solving the issue.
    Cheers !

Did you check the ecu earths and supplies? Not that familiar with the 90's but ecu earths are on the engine block somewhere. Those faults can produce numerous codes sometimes.
You need to back probe the ecu harness plugs - get hold of the factory service manual and also check outputs from crank and possibly cam angle sensors and if available scope them for the correct waveform.

        Thanks adrian
Ecu is good all earths are ok we did continuity test of all the wiring lume to the ecu and no problems there.
I have the factory service manual will ask the mate to check the crank and crank and cam angle sensors to see if that fixes the fault.

A check of the net for what its worth returns for a different model:

"The code 55 you are getting, in Toyota terms, as as follows:

"No number one knock sensor signal to the ECU for four crank revolutions under these 2 conditions: Coolant temperature 140 degrees F or more; Engine speed between 1600 and 5200 RPM."

It also mentioned that when this happens the ignition timing goes to full retard which would explains the lack of power. You need to scope the inputs to the ECU and see what you get when the fault occurs, if your getting a signal from the knock sensors then it would appear the ECU is faulty and that no doubt would be an expensive unit to replace. I would take the car to a fuel injection specialist and get them to look at it.
