  • Kuhmo mt 51 or KO2's

Hi all. I'm currently running hankook ATs 265/70/17. I've been happy with them but would like something a little more aggressive. I'm planning on a trip to the flinders and up to the strzelecki track towing a camper trailer. I'm really tossing up between the KO2s and the MT51. Just wondering if anyone has a set of the MT51s and if you've got any feedback.
    Cheers

Have you looked at the Hankook MT RT03.
I have no personal experience with the MTs but there are a lot of good reviews.

Hi Hally. Not keen to run a straight out mud tyre. If I had the cash I would get a 2nd set of rims and have a set of muddies but budget doesn't allow at the moment.

No first hand experience but I was talking to my local tyre shop pricing up KO2 and they suggest the MT51 as they were putting them on their own truck. He made a good point, he could have any tire he wanted for promo at no cost and thats the one he choose... I have Cooper ST at the moment and I would probably go MT51, although I did see a cheap MT tyre that was meant to be good in the 150 forum.

Yeah. Whilst I haven't priced them up yet, I'm sure they'll come in cheaper than the KO2s. Both will get the job done. I'm also assuming the MT51 will lose out on the road handling and will probably be noisier as time gets on. Anyone got them on at the moment?

Don't know about the MT51s but I had the BFG A/Ts up in the Flinders a few years ago and we suffered a lot of chipping. We were towing an off-road caravan at the time.

I put KO2s on earlier this year and have just returned from the Kimberleys (and the Tanami Track) and they performed really well. No chipping at all.

The other thing I like about the KO2s is that the side lugs protected the sidewalls even when we were down to 24psi.

The MT51 should be more comparable to MT ATZ P3. And similar to S/T Maxx

Cheers harry. I've heard the KO2s have been a good step in the right direction. My brother has them on his 200 series after replacing the cooper AT3s after 20kms because he was so disappointed with them. I'm heading in the KO2 direction but the MT51 is an attractive unknown for me.

ive MT 5rib AT, there so noisy now , they have been great until about 65 - 70 k now they have that whine noise, plenty of tread left, im looking at others for the next tyre, wasn't impressed with BFG AT KO 1 , but im hearing good reports about the 2s ..

I cant complain about the KO'2 so far. The wet weather handling has improved lots and as others have also mentioned the road noise is well down on the old KO's. I wouldn't consider anything else after +70K's on the old KO's including the Mereenie Loop and Cape York all with not a puncture or issue whatsoever. They did sustain some chipping on the 'Loop' but were already 20K K's old. They held out for the rest of the circumference including towing the boat up the West to Darwin. Reckon my new KO2's will go the distance again no worries.

Cheers guys. Unless an MT51 champion jumps on and provides something that would make me think otherwise, I think I'll be ordering the KO2s when it's time. 👍

I have two dislikes with regard to the KO2's - first is the width, sitting them next to the likes of the MT atz p3, they are a thinner tyre even though they are the same spec, I think it's due to the way the tread patten blocks curve in on the edges. The second is the way the tread pattern picks up small stones on dirt roads, drives me nuts.

Other then that they are great, quite and pretty good off-road. Side walls look good too.

Kuhmo MT51, Just purchased these tires 265/70/17 for the Prado 150 (2015). I did a fair bit of shopping around and after going to the supplier of the Micky T's they have gone up to $410 a tyre (day light robbery). I have the Mickeys on my Triton and well yer I love em (not the best in the sand, like paddles). However 3 for 4 deal going on the MT51's ya cant go wrong and made a very easy decision. $248 a tyre compared to the $410. Best thing is they look great, cannot comment on performance yet as I just got them yesterday. Cant be to bad if ARB are putting them on their car in Bundy.
Anyway if ya chasing a deal I would go the MT51's

Are the MT51's 3 ply side walls? I've read websites that suggest this however couldn't find it on the Kumho site.
