Hey Hergy, so are you happy with the HX1?
I know it's an android tablet etc etc but my old IPad Air is wifi only so to use the app I've either got to get a GPS module (about $300) or new IPad with data facility (so GPS will work, $800). I like the idea of a dedicated map device anyway.
I can get a HX1 from the RAA for $629 so think it's a pretty good deal.
Couple of questions, the old Hema had a sun glare shade, do you need one for HX1 and do they have one available.
Also, looking at doing NZ trip soon. Don't think it has 4WD maps for NZ but normal driving GPS facility. Is that right?
Is the normal driving GPS ok? I would like to consider this as an option. I have the Toyota GPS as it came with the Altitude. As indicated in other threads, Toyota GPS is always a few years behind and costs about $400 to upgrade. ( pita to use too)

Dr Air Pro 150 ltr air compressor. ARB 60 ltr fridge. GME 3550s UHF radio. Hema HX1.

      Hi Pirate Pete.

Yes i am happy with it, so far the HX1 is ok in the sun but a screen would not hurt i suppose. It has street mapping for NZ but NOT Explore maps. I actually find the street mapping better then the GPS in me Kakadu. So far i am happy with it, i have sent a few questions of to Hema and will wait their reply regarding map downloads and the rendering of maps. Other then that i like the lifetime updates for the Explore maps and 3 years for the street mapping.

Ok.. think I have finally decided to go the HX1. Having a tidy power option was important & I have just installed a Lightforce dual 2.1 amp USB in switch blank on left of steering wheel. After reading all the questions on PP, I spoke to a technical guy at Hema in Qld who was really good. USB cable now over metre long and is fine for power supply.

Principal reason for going HX1 is that it's internal temperature sensor is set to 60° rather than about 30° in iPads etc. guys at Electric Bug in Adelaide also said that people using the app have this problem.

16Gb internal memory but only about 5Gb available for the user. Suggested that if you want to download detail maps, only download for the trip you plan and delete them before next trip where you want detail maps then no problems. 32Gb memory card you can install is just for hoots & videos, not maps.

Looking at developing a visor like on HN7 which should be out soon.

That for short trips, but for long trips or a lap I can see that being a PITA.

I also have a non cellular iPad that I'd like to use for trips, so in order to make it work I bought one of these for about $130 or so, have a look on the JohnnyAppleSeed site:
                  Garmin GLO Bluetooth GPS (010-01055-15)

One advantage is it accepts up to 10 devices connecting (BT) to it so if your kids want tap into see where they are, they can

Just picked up HX1 10 days old for $500 with all the bits and box. Registered now and works well. Have been using a tablet with Oziexplorer stuck to the sun visor so will be interesting to see how they compare. The 3D street navigation looks good. It loads pretty fast and the screen interaction also works well.

Recently bought one, It's my first Hema GPS, other one's were all smaller units. Happy with the unit, biggest hassle is getting use to having such a large unit mounted on the windscreen.

The mate & I went out on the weekend 4wdriving. He had the HX1 and I had the Garmin Montana 650T. When comparing where we were (Kenilworth SF in QLD), his HX1 had no road markings at all where as my Garmin Montana had all the tracks in the area. So, from that experience, I'm not rushing out to buy one until I can be sure it's going to be better than what it is replacing.....

I'll bet he was only running the general map. He should have downloaded the detailed maps from the HEMA cloud.
