    Dual battery and electrical things

    Dual battery and electrical setup
Battery: Optima D27M from Battery Specialities
Battery tray: TBD - do i need an expensive metal tray?
    - Piranah
    - TJM
    - Outback Accessories - need more info...
    - Offroad Down Under
Battery fuses: 2 x MEGA fuses & cases
VSR: Traxide USI-160 (expecting i'll get a winch at some point) - LINK
    - Tim was very helpful when talking to him about options
Battery protection: Trixide ABG-25 - LINK
Fusebox: Littlefuse XT safety hub from SolidKit - LINK
    - fused outlets to front and rear USB chargers, UHF radio, fridge rear bar (when i come to it)
    - Peter from SolidKit was very helpful discussing options

USB charging: SolidKit dual USB switch socket chargers - LINK
Fridge power: TBD. Tempted to use Anderson on the internal fridge power, so it can also be used in connector on towbar when i get to it and placed in the tent when camping.

I'm planning to use 3B&S cable between the batteries to a fusebox in the rear, where i'll break out to a external anderson connector and the internal accessories.

Is that 3B&S to the rear or have I misread? Unless you're intending on cranking from a battery in the rear, 6B&S (approx 13mm2) would be ample.

        Welcome Steve,

Re Battery Tray - you can use a plastic (N70 sized) tray in the AUX spot. If its good enough for toyota under the cranking battery cant see why its not good enough under the AUX battery! Just get a solid set of battery clamps and also wouldn't hurt to brace the clamps to the front panel - there is an OEM bolt in just the right spot for this, under the black plastic cover.

Good choice on the USI-160 from traxide, if/when a winch meets my rig thats the kit I'm getting...
        Cheers

I was going to run the 3B&S from the AUX battery fuse to a fused terminal in the rear, at which point i'd spur to 6B&S to an Anderson connector and smaller to internal accessories.
Should i draw 50 amps at a rear anderson + up to 30amps for accessories & lighting, it looks like i'd be better off with 3B&S rather than 6B&S on a 6m cable run. Website chart.

Do you ever draw 50A on a trailer? If that's just the spec for the Anderson and it's only 20 or 30A, then i'm very happy to save a few $$$ if 6B&S is adequate.
ATM, i don't have a trailer but was looking to install the cable once to cope with whatever happens in the future.

That's kind of what i was thinking/hoping - though isn't a N70 battery larger/heavier than the standard which may require additional support. If you've not had issues, then were good.

3B&S is a bit of an overkill, as it is rated for 215amps. I ran 6B&S straight form the battery to the anderson plug and a separate 8B&S from the battery to a fuse block in the rear for accessories. It separates the external power form the internal power and also means you don't need a big fuse in the block at the back, as most of them only recommend 30amp fuse max form what I have seen.
I also used 6B&S between the batteries as it is only a short distance and has sufficient rating for the distance.

Is there an advantage to having separate power for external and internal connections?
              - i've not come across this before as a suggested idea.

My thinking was: larger cable to rear would mean minimal voltage drop for both internal and external devices and minimum number of large cable runs.

                Steve,

Not sure if there is an advantage or not but it is the way a friend of mine who was involved in the industry recommended fitting it and it has not caused me any issues in the vehicles I have fitted that way. The reason he gave was the external connection will be subject to the weather and other abuse, then the ones in the car. Also if the external connection gets shorted out it doesn't affect the internal ones.
As for power loss I get the same voltage reading from the 6B&S at the anderson plug as I get from the battery terminals, and the same as the 8B&S inside the car, so no detectable loss over the 4-5m of cable.

Is that measurement taken when the circuit is under load? Ie the voltage drop from cable runs will only be detectable when under load

And the Rhino Rack Backbone and Pioneer Platform

I've screwed up the rear mounting bolts on the drivers side - need to find out how to get behind the paneling and fix that!

Fitting process was ok but fiddly. There were no instructions!

The covers are slip-over neoprene with velcro fasteners, so it's like putting a wetsuit on your chairs. Essentially pull the pieces over and adjust by pulling any loose/incorrectly possitioned bits.

It was fairly easy to tell which pieces fit onto which parts of the seat.

I've spent the weekend starting the instal of my dual battery.

                            Battery installed.
I thought i would have the fusebox, etc here so would require the extra terminals, but the fuses on the other side now.

Ran 3B&S cable along space of bottom door sill from front to rear

                            3B&S cable out the rear

I've still to complete (hopefully tonight/tomorrow morning):
                            1. Front fuxebox for accessories
                            2. connect VSR switch and battery monitor
                            3. Fuses and power sockets in the rear.

Finished off the electrical access points

USB charger for phone holder and dual battery monitor on r/h dash seitches

Replaced Traxide VSR switch with one from AoB on l/h dash switche panel. The switch backlight acts as the LED on the traxide switch.

Additional USB charging in center console

Anderson and USB charger in rear

Happy how subtle everything looks. A little disappointed that all of the USB sockets have LED lights that stay on...
