  • DPF clean failed

I had my 2016 gxl in for its first service at 5000 kms as I was driving from northern WA to Melbourne and would be over the 10000 kms service. At about 7000kms the DPF clean failed. I called Alice Springs Toyota and was told it was fine to drive (over 500kms) but needed to go in to be serviced by them. Given that it was Saturday arvo I would had to wait till Monday. I decided to keep driving as I was planning on being in Melbourne by Monday anyway.

When I dropped it off to Toyota they told the DPF had failed due to stop/start driving and lots of short trips..

I told them that in the last 71 hours it had done 4021kms and due to living in a remote community in the Kimberley the car only gets used to do a 700km drive down to the closest town. So short stop/start trips cannot be the cause of the blockage..

They refused to acknowledge this and still say its due to the driving.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm aabout to head back up north via Perth and don't particularly want keep having this fail again.

Toyota is apparently full of it, or at least this dealer is. There is a long thread on this for a car at a similar km. It is down the page a bit in the 150 diesel engine part and is called 2.8 DPF fail. Toyota DID make this dpf get clean and 5000+ km later it is fine. Read thread and try another dealer.

Sounds like a warranty job to me, unless the sale contract says each trip must be at least 100km.

Apparently a number of vehicles have had a carbonised injection nozzle in the DPF unit. Have you seen white smoke when it tries to burn? There have also been some faulty DPF units.

Well who would fork out the cash for a new DPF ?
A tune and DPF delete would be the same $$

I have no intention of deleting myn as is but if it fails and it cost me it's going

I'm with you on that one Phs. I want to plan trips to the Cape and Big Red but with the DPF stories I'm reading I have limited confidence in the Prado on a big remote trip. Although to date I haven't had any issues..

They did a clean under warranty. The service advisor had no idea (didn't even know you could program the windows down on unlock) but still told me it's due to short trips...

I did eventually talk to one of the techs and he was saying that they are starting to see a few hiluxs and fortuners with the 2.8 engine having this issue, this was the first prado that they had had tho.

Will see if I have the same issue in a couple of weeks when i have another short trip going back to the Kimberley from Melbourne via Perth. Maybe that will be long enough for them!

ok so they blame short trips, and why is that my problem I purchased a car.
Does that mean the car cannot be used as a normal functional car ?
It's a fair joke if it can't do short trips and there is no DPF durn button then it's useless

                Billie,
Sounds like something is a miss given your driving I'm sure you will soon find out if it is now fixed for good or not

What engine oil are you using ?

I hear about these delete things for the DPF and have no idea what they are (other than from what I see it's an ECU change or an add-on). So my question would be - can it be added like, say, a DP Chip - and simply not used until you're stuck in the McDonnel Ranges and your DPF fails? Can you then plug it in, bypass the DPF, and get home that way? Rather than having the choose between noodle or not to noodle...

Camjam, as I understand it a pipe replaces the DPF and the ECU is flashed to override/remove the DPF functionality. Hence it is a fairly extensive change and not something you want to be doing out in the ranges.

The car didn't seem to be hindered by the DPF failing, and was driven from half way between Katherine and Tennent creek to Melbourne with the failed burn.

So I wouldn't lose confidence in it for your remote trip. I live in Kalumburu so as remote as can get really and it has been serving me well.
Only other issue I have had was the intake manifold runner control was failing, Toyota was stumped, turned out to be a bit of that fine red Kimberley dust had stuck on the Mass Air Sensor just on the intake side of the air filter... 2 screws to whip it out and give it a good spray with MAS cleaner and she was all good...

Urgh, I've just arrived in Eucla on my way to Melbourne with the DPF light flashing. Trying to work out if it's a stop or carry on situation.

Try the 2000rpm fast idle for 20 mins as mentioned above?? Nothing to lose.

If the idle rpm is at 900 for Auto or 1200 for manual. Run the engine at about 2000 rpm for about 10 mins stationary (as mentioned by 404pug). This might just help clear the unit as the running DPF temp will be nearing 700 deg which seems to be far higher than when cruising at 100-110km/h. Seems like longer extended drives are whats causing these DPF issue so far from forum members.
