  • Replace Rear Reverse Camera on 2009 Kakadu (150 Series)

    Hi Guys,

This is my very first post on this forum, though it comes very highly recommended from a number of different sources!

So... to get to my query....

I have a 2009 Kakadu which I absolutely love! One of my main issues is that the reverse camera is extremely cloudy/grainy. I've tried using lens restorer solutions/kits which helped a little - but not a great deal. I'm called Toyota and got quoted $390 just for the rear camera (I can remove and install myself), but jeez - $390 just for the small black camera??

I had a look on eBay, Gumtree and random Googling but the only options I've found are 3rd party camera options that have a different connector plug to the Genuine Toyota one so it will probably require allot of fiddling around. My current (genuine Toyota) camera has a round 4-pin plug but all the after market ones I've seen seem to have the generic RCA connections.

I've also tried calling various car wreckers to see if they have a camera I can buy but they won't sell the camera alone - they sell it with the whole rear end.

Does anyone have any advice, tips or pointers?

    Thanks in advance,
    Omar

    Hi Omar,

This is my first post and first reply. This forum has been my goto source of information for the past 6 month while I've built up my rig, so hopefully I can help others here with things I've learnt and a rig build up when I get around to it.

If you are still looking to replace your camera I may be able to help. I have a 2014 Prado Kakadu, so not sure if it's the same camera as yours, mine has a 6 pin connector. I had a scratch on my reverse camera, courtesy of the many stones on the Oodnadatta track. I found little information about it on the web/ebay/gumtree etc just like you and even on PradoPoint, which surprised me as PP always seems to have the answer.

I took the camera off the Prado and grabbed the model number and googled it with with mixed results. Some sites listing many cameras, one of which was mine but no details on how to purchase or pricing. Seeing several of the cameras for US models looked very similar to mine, I put just the first half of the model number (86790) into ebay and found this camera for a 2014-2015 Tacoma (several others came up, one of which was 2008-2013 Tacoma, might suit you):
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-Secur...19.m1438.l2649.
I took the punt and purchased it as $53.60 (shipped) was better that Local Toyota dealer quote of nearly $600 AUD. It arrived today and I installed it. Slight problem, the image was upside down. I checked the hidden service menu (Hold the Apps button and turn and lights on and off 3 times) as I recalled a camera setting in there, but nothing to flip the image. So I had to file out the mount slightly and flipped the camera in the mount. It fits perfectly and works perfectly and looks like identical to my old genuine camera.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers Dan
