  • What gps is everyone using

    There are many options.

The main issues I would look at are -
    • what map upgrades will be available in the future
    • how often are they upgraded
    • how much do the upgrades cost
    Greg - 08 D4D Prado,
Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.

10 year old Garmin Nuvi but I pay Oztopo $30 pa to update the camerea locations etc. monthly. The actual maps are due for an update but it is cheaper to buy a new bigger unit.

Personally i use VMS, and i love it, when looking around i thought HEMA is the way to go, after some research and in shop playing around with it i discovered it was over rated, maybe I'm useless when it comes to operating electronic gadgets but the HEMA HN7 didn't impress me, you needed a pilots license to operate it, not to mention i went to 2 different shops and on both occasions those in the know had troubles trying to navigate around it, and basically failed to show me what it can do, even went outside and still couldn't get it to work, hence i got the VMS and haven't looked back, had it about 7 months used it quite a few times, it is user friendly unlike the HEMA HN7, cant comment on the X1 never looked at one.

I am using Garmin; two Garmin nuvi (for cars) and a Garmin Montana (on motorbike)
          Reason:
          - I am used to the PC software and the user interface
          - I found them very robust (used several since almost 20 year on motorbikes)
          - you get VERY accurate maps for free at http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/. It combines door-to-door routing with the details of topographic maps. You get them worldwide and I found them on par or aheadof commercially available maps in AU and even more at exotic places in Africa and Asia

          Cheers

Samsung Galaxy 8 Inch Tablet, mounted in a RAM floor mount. I use WAZE for street navigation (absolutely brilliant, real-time navigation. SO real time, that it often alerts me to cars parked in emergency lanes on the freeway, and takes back streets to avoid traffic). Still trying to work out which 4wd navigation app to choose. The tablet is also my Magazine/Book Reader. I purchased a Telstra 4G wireless car kit which provides the tablet with internet in the car (for real-time traffic information).

I purchased the tablet for about $350 on special from Amazon, RAM mount was about $100-$150, Telstra 4G was on special for $50 and the 4G mobile SIM is linked to my mobile phone plan and doesn't cost me anything more than I was already paying.
Prado_The_2nd now on my Third Prado (and 2 Landcruisers before that!)
            2012 Altitude, Petrol
ARB Deluxe Bar, Towbar, Driving Lights and bits and pieces of other tech.

I use a Samsung 8" tablet (nix on qantas points) on a hold my phone suction mount that I have modified and using oziexplorer on android. My mobile phone is set to auto turn on the wifi hotspot and that creates a wifi network sharing the phone's 4G internet in the car for the tablet, the old samsung phone running torque (obd display) and any of the kids devices that don't have 3G/4G.

The daily tracks that ozi creates are auto shared back to my dropbox, daily so I can use them on the desktop pc at home seamlessly and waypoints are saved back onto the tablet from the pc at home the same way. Just have to import them in the car in ozi to use them. Look for dropsync on google play store.

For street nav I have used Sygic for years, I do have Waze and used it when it first appeared - I'll try Waze again, it must have matured a fair bit since.

              Cheers

I think Waze has matured well. It alerted me to a traffic jam on Eastlink today, advised me my ETA would increase by 8 minutes, which was pretty much exact!

That being said, Channel 40 on the UHF also alerted me to the same traffic jam, provided much the same information, just with more F###'s and polite opinions on the ability of various drivers
