  • Cheap Spare Keys

    Hello all,
I needed some spare keys for my 120 as I only had one master key and the grey valet key. I found a company on eBay called Amalgamated Locksmiths based in NEWSTEAD Brisbane who were selling spare Toyota Prado master keys for $58.50 including postage. I checked inside my master key to confirm my key was the correct code and contacted them via eBay to order two new spare master keys. Rather than going into the store I emailed through my Toyota key code from the inside of the service book and a picture of the blade of the key. They confirmed Toyota key code was in fact correct and cut the keys and sent them out via post. All up took a couple of days. I was surprised to see that new key fobs actually have the Toyota logo on them and look identical to my original master key. One key worked perfectly straight up, literally 10mins to programme in to the car. Second key operated remote entry but not immobiliser. Notified Amalgamated and got a new immobiliser chip sent out via post. Took a couple of days then 2 mins to change chip then both keys working 100%. I have no involvement with Amalgamated Locksmiths but found the product and service to be first class, especially not having to drive into store or make an appointment at the Locksmiths. Hopefully it might save a few people some reasonable dollars if they use this service rather than Toyota's outrageous price for replacement keys. Cheap insurance too if you only have one master key or want to leave a second spare key somewhere else.
    Cheers,
    Dave

Does anyone know where to find similarly priced keys for a 150 series with a proximity key / fob?

What was the cost all up for the services?

      Key $58.50
      Cutting $ ??.??
      Immobiliser Chip $??.??

I find the cost of cutting auto keys is ridiculous ($5 for a house key, $75 for a car key when you supply the key).

Also, can you point me in the direction of the instructions to program the key. Need to sort out a couple of spares myself.

      Thanks.

This is the instructions, same as what came with my key from ebay which from memory was the same locksmith as first poster in this thread. Cost me $20 to get cut and the chip came with the key. The place that cut it wanted $250 to program it as well but did as per instructions myself though took 2 or 3 goes to get it right. All up about 10 minutes.

          Abcxyz,
$58.50 was all inclusive, key and remote fob, cut to Toyota key code number, Toyota logo on fob, immobiliser chip and postage. Total cost $117 for two keys. Both working perfectly now. If you look them up on eBay their website has full details of how to manually programme the keys for remote and immobiliser function. Very straight forward. I think that they also sent a copy of the instructions out with the keys. If you drop them an email at [email protected] they should be able to help you out. You do need to check the code inside your key fob, plus the blade of the key, have the Toyota key code number available and email them a photo of your key blade to double check correct Toyota code. If everything is right they should be able to cut them and post them out to you.

Bing10, to the best of my knowledge they can't reproduce the proximity keys unfortunately. They can possibly cut the blade that is normally attached to the proximity key which would allow you access to the vehicle in an emergency (I think), but you would not be able to start the vehicle due to the immobiliser. They are a fair bit more expensive for a copy key as well, from memory over $100. I am no expert on this, but have a friend who is down to her last key on a brand new Q7 who I have been trying to get a spare key for. Toyota keys are expensive but Audi is on another level again in terms of cost. After weeks of trying to get a copy key cut she has decided to bite the bullet and buy a replacement from Audi. It might be worth an email to Amalgamated Locksmiths with a photo of your proximity keys and the details of any key codes that you have. I dealt with a bloke called Wayne who was very helpful, they may be able to assist.

This post was prepared when I had this car in 2013, but somehow it never ended up being posted to the forum....

I have just gone through the exercise of cutting spare keys and remote locking transponders and wanted to share my experiences. I have (had) a 2002 Prado VX, VZJ95R auto sold in the Australian market. The car was purchased with one black master key and one remote locking transponder.
              First, the hardware:
Bought a remote transponder from Toyota ($45). It’s the cheapest I could find, even on ebay.
Bought 2 spare keys from ebay from seller “autoniz” (USA). I sneakily copied the part number for the key from the Toyota dealers computer screen when he wasn’t looking “692062 TOY43AT4” and matched this to a 2002 Landcruiser blank key on the USA website. The blank key was advertised as a transponder key with 4C chip without a dot or “G” on the shank. Keys cost me $28 incl postage for two. Key cutting was done at my local key cutter for $9 each.
              Now the firmware:
For the transponder remote I followed the instructions in the Toyota Manual. The first time I did it too slowly. The second time it worked.
              1) Ensure one door is open
              2) Remove key from ignition…
No further instructions were recorded I’m afraid. Toyota manual should have the details.

For the key, I had 4 procedures to chose from. From the Toyota Prado Service Manual, from a forum, and two from the key seller. The forum procedure (turn key 5 times, then open door 6 times etc) did not work. The Toyota Service Manual instructions also did not work. The sellers instructions worked as follows:
              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dNCOltF7kk
              1) Make sure all the doors are closed.
              2) Press the accelerator and the brake at the same time once.
              3) Immediately insert your programmed master key.
              4) Immediately press and release the "accelerator" five times in 15 sec
              5) Immediately after step 4, press and release the "brake" six times in 20 sec.
              6) Remove the master key.
              7) Within 10 seconds, insert new key.
              8) Press the accelerator once.
              9) Wait 120 seconds or until a click is heard and immobiliser light goes off.
              10) Remove the key and press brake once.
              It is now programmed.

              Hope this helps someone out.
              Tom
