So I'm booked in for next Tuesday 24th of Jan. Getting it done in Kynteon by an Authorised dealer.

Hoping it's as good as when I did the hilux.

Has anyone on here done a 2.8 yet ?

    Cheers

    SLIPS

As it's plug n play I want to push the engine now while it's under warranty. It can always be removed and doesn't leave a trace.

                  Diesel Chip

I bought a new Prado 2.8 GX auto Diesel last month. Average fuel economy settled down to 11.1 ltrs/100klms for city and highway driving.
I bought and installed a Chip Express unit from the UK for $670 delivered to the door.
They have a few changeable settings but I am using the default setting for now.
I know they are not as good as the more expensive programmable ones, but I had great results with one on my last diesel, so don't need any convincing.
They can be removed quickly if needed before a service.
Now, for the same driving, average economy has settled down to 9.3 ltrs/100klms, which is more respectable.
It goes down to the mid 7 ltrs/100 on the highway in top gear.
There is obviously more power, most noticeable in acceleration off the mark, if I want to use it.
But the better fuel economy was what I was really after.
These engines are so de-tuned because of the emissions standards, its not funny.
Next I will fit an EGR blanking plate.

This unit looks very similar to DP chip. I really don't have any experience with them so I can't really comment. However it does not seem to be a fully programble live dyno tune piggy back system. It seems to be a one does all. Am I wrong ? One thing I've learnt with my previous hilux is that even though it might be the same spec motor, they aint the same and need to to be individually tuned for safety.

Is this a fuel rail pressure style chip ? So many on the market today how do ya pick one ey !

Plug in chips with tune a useless border line scam.

Full symo tune piggy back is the only option.

It has just basic settings. It comes pre-set for the vehicle model. The settings just increase or decrease power, depending on what you want to achieve. It runs off the plug to the back of the fuel rail . I found it was the easiest and lowest investment, without having to take it to an expert and go the full hog. I don't know why there are similar ones costing a lot more. Maybe because you can buy them direct, not from a reseller or distributor. My Landrover D3 did 170,000 with one and it never gave a problem or affected the temperamental LR electronics, hence why I got one for the Prado.

Fuel Rail Pressure Chips are not a safe way of gaining power. Thats what yours is if thats where it plugs in. It raises the voltage to give more fuel. It also doesn't have saftey parametres as its not receiving any info from the ECU.

May work for ever with no dramas but I've seen and read so many failures. If your towing 2t plus on hot days be very careful.

Have Owned a fair few vehicles and have used after market ECUs, piggy back chips and factory ECU re tunes.
They can all have issues from poor install to poor tuning to glitches / malfunctioning

My verdict is they all require monitoring. Best advise is get boost gauge and Exhaust temp gauge ( best mounted In manifold ). Even better do it a few weeks prior to your performance upgrade see what is normal factory operation

You need to have alot of confidence in your installer or tuner, unfortunetly something gives you will be wearing it.

Monitoring exhaust temps in the manifold gives a true temp. Dump pipe readings generally are an Ok method but can be misleading due to the wastegate dumping boost

Manifold exhaust temps and tuning diesel motors is the best method to keep an eye on safe operation

Installed and loving it ! Made a little more power than they claim. Could have made more but it's getting outside the safety parameters.

Pulls very hard. Torque down low is unreal.

Got the map selection for free as they were doing a promo.

                              Worth every cent !

                              Very happy !

Have towed my 2.5 Tonne caravan, pulls hard !

                              Highly recommend
