  • EGR Blanking Plate Install

    Hello all,
I have searched and read just about every thread that that I could find on the above and have also scoured google for outside information. Basically I have a Dec 2008 D4d with the dipstick on the drivers side and the power steering fluid reservoir on the passenger side in front of the EGR blanking plate location. Every step by step guide that I could find had the dipstick on the passenger side so I am assuming different engine, maybe earlier or later hilux? The 'hilux' install seems very straight forward although a bit fiddly due to tight access. I have started to dismantle parts on my engine to allow access to install blanking plate but to be honest it looks nigh on impossible to access in my case. From the point that I am at now I cannot see a straightforward way to install the plate without a huge amount of stripping down work just to gain some limited access to the flange on the EGR cooler. If anyone could point me in the way of a comprehensive step by step guide for this particular engine I would be most grateful. I have all the necessary tools and I am reasonably competent mechanically, I just need a bit of direction and reassurance that what I am doing is correct.
    Thanks,
    DHM77

    Hi mate,

I followed the guide on the Ozbush website http://ozbushelectronics.com.au/atta...V_EngineV1.pdf

I had to remove the engine cover and undo the power steering bracket, from memory 3 bolts and move it out of the way. I didnt disconnect any of the lines, just unbracket it and move it. I also had to loosen the EGR cooler bolt as mentioned in the guide so the cooler can be levered out, and i undone the fuel pressure sensor connector. This is all the "dismantling" i done.

Not sure what blanking plate you got but i got this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/262375275371

It's got cut outs so you dont have to remove the flange bolts completely, just loosen them and slip the plate in. Also what really helped is that little tab hanging off the plate, i bent that 90 degrees and could hold the tab using a large set of long nose pliers which made slipping the plate in really easy as there's not much room for your hand.

      Low range,
I was trying to follow the ozbush instructions but in my case I seem to have a huge amount of stuff in the way of accessing the EGR flange. I believe that the photos on Young's instructions are of a different engine to mine. I have given up on it today and started my dual battery install. I will have another look at it tomorrow morning but I honestly don't think that I will be able to install it without stripping out a lot of additional parts in front of the EGR. Now that I have the mapper in and working correctly I really want to block off the EGR to stop more crap being dumped into the engine. If I definitely can't do it I may have to pay someone to install when I get the injectors done.

What else is in the way? Are you sure you are installing the blanking plate in the right location?

Our engines are identical, and the things i mentioned above is all i had to undo or remove. If your blanking plate has that little tab, definitely bend it almost 90 degrees to the plate and grip it with long nose pliers it makes it much easier to reach in and slide the plate up under the flange with one hand while you are levering the EGR cooler out slightly with a big screwdriver with the other.

If you were closer i would come and give you a hand.

Mate, I will give it another go tomorrow and will keep at it until. I have it installed and the job is finished. Unfortunately don't have the tab on my blanking plate so will have to slide in to place by hand. Thanks for your help.

Are you due for a cambelt??

If you are, then install the EGR block at the same time

the EGR is literally right there.

You take the cambelt off, and then the back plate to change the cam seal. The egr is extremely easy to get to, its unbelievable.

I thought the full blank caused fault codes to be thrown, thus the move to a plate with 7mm hole at centre???

                Red & Stan,
Just had cambelt done unfortunately, with the benefit of hindsight I should have had the blanking plate done at the same time. The full blank plate works with Ozbush's manual mapper without throwing codes. I have the mapper in place, seems to be running really well, just got to get the full blank plate installed. I was going to try to do today but got sidetracked with some other electrical jobs so may try tomorrow.

The OP and i have the mapper http://ozbushelectronics.com.au which allows a full EGR block and no fault codes. If you dont have that, or some sort of ECU remap that does an EGR delete then yes you will need to use a plate with a 7mm hole.

Hi - i'm having trouble finding the 2nd bolt that on the EGR cooler? not really detailed in the ozbush image? Any tips on finding that 2nd bolt?

I also have a blank with a 7mm hole but still getting a code come up (blank was installed at shop with other work - code came up on drive home) - i'm assuming i need to make the hole bigger.

While waiting for someone with better knowledge than me, can you put what model you have as the solution will vary accordingly.

I can tell you that if you have a 2.8 then 7mm is too small, if you have a 3.0 then 7 mm is the usual one used.

I fitted a blanking plate to my Prado with 1kd engine. The plate had the 7mm hole and all went well, didn't really notice any difference, my egr was pretty clean to start with. Now, different story towing my 19' van. Had engine light come on and went to limp mode. This had happened 4 times this trip. Came up with code P1251 which is turbo stepper motor circuit. Removed plate, no more problems. If you plan on towing have a second think about it. Maybe needs bigger hole but then what's the point of it.
Hardest part of the job is releasing the electrical plug just in front of where the plate goes. If you want more info on fitting let me know.

The recommendation is to fit the blanking plate between the head and the EGR pipe. When I had the throttle body off recently it looks as though the plate could go there between the throttle body and the EGR pipe. Is there any reason why it could not go there instead of the other end of the EGR pipe near the head? I assume that a 7mm restriction would work wherever it was put in the EFT pipe.

I believe the theory is to block it as close to the source as possible. I believe there is more detail somewhere in this thread http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...ff-or-restrict.

rIV39, I had a local shop put the plate in, and when cleaning my EGR yesterday I found they had put the plate in up top near the EGR... Seems to work ok, but not sure if this is ok to leave here...
