Can anyone help me out? I still get confused with weights.
Ive a 120 GXL KDJ. & a Jayco OB Expanda caravan. I was fully loaded with diesel and everything for a week bush camping inc 180l water. I went over a weighbridge to get some numbers. this is what came back-
    car-2600kg
    caravan 2160kg
    Hitched-car 2800kg,caravan 1960kg
    tow ball 200kg

On my caravan plate it says
    ATM 2001kg
    GTM1845kgTare 1626kg
    Empty Ball Mass 156Kg
    Axle/Axle group load Capacity 2000kg (i'm a single axle)
Can someone please help me understand if I'm overloaded.... I can leave the wife at home, but am not willing to sacrifice the beer to save weight!!!

MoSue your van is overloaded. The most it can weigh is the ATM 2001kg (inc towball mass) and as you have come in at 2160kg you are in effect 159kg over the limit.

If the tare IS correct (apparently it is commonly lower on the plate than actual mass) then you have essentially added 534kg of payload.
      Cheers
      Micheal.

Just to add you're only 100kg under your GVM so if you're car wasn't fully loaded on the weigh bridge (i.e. people in the car, full fuel tanks, etc) you may want to look closer at that as well.

Can my Prado 120 diesel tow this with 2 adults and 5 children in the car?

With capacity for 2 Adults and 4 kids, the XT16HR Family offers everything the offroad adventurer wants from their Caravan!

I very much doubt if you could tow that van legally with any Prado with an ATM of 2.5T or 3.0T loaded with a family of 7. Fill your Prado's fuel tank and take it to a weighbridge with $30. Take that weight and add the weight of your human cargo, than add whatever else you want to carry in the Prado, than add the caravan's towball weight. The vehicle will be at or over the vehicle's GVM of 2990kg.

With the Prado loaded to the limit, GCM is limited to 5490kg so the maximum you can tow is 2500kg, regardless of whether your Prado has an ATM of 2.5 or 3.0T. The XT16HR has a tare weight of 2250kg. Add fridge, food, gas bottles, bedding and you would not be able to half fill the water tanks (160L capacity = 160kg).

I have a similar style caravan (Southern Cross 13-16), with Tare weight of 1980kg (270kg less than the MDC XT16HR). The 150 Prado has an ATM of 2500Kg. With the car loaded and with 2 average weight adults (75 and 80kg), we still can't fill the van's water tanks and remain legal. We have weighed both the loaded Prado (it has 2.5T ATM) and the loaded caravan (but with only 160L of the 240L water capacity) and come in with GCM at about 5460kg.
