    Hello All,
    Thank you for your postings.
I'm in a final process to get my suspensions with ARB and they are suggesting to use #2884 - 4/03ONF Coil with 9000 sport strut for front and #2895 - 4/03ONR and 6004 Sport shock for rear.

    any thought on this system?....
    Thanks,

A very common configuration Selvan - matched for steel bull bar (no winch) and/or dual batts in the front and medium duty 0 - 200kg usual load in the rear.

You'll not have any problems with that kit as they must be thousands of Prados running around OZ set-up the same, assuming the accessory load is as above of course.
      Cheers
      Micheal.

I did in my 2 day old 120. Only mods were tyres and a snorkle. The corrugations are horrific (Hence my Username). - let your tyres down and that will help. I went up at 40 psi. 35 made all the difference. Would probably go to 32 next time.

10 yr old shocks do need replacing. The cost of a 2" lift will be little more than a straight replacement, and will help you feel much more confident in the tricky spots.

I put Bilsteins on at 100,000 km and did the Simpson crossing. They were stuffed at the other side of the desert - leaking oil. They were the recommended spec after I weighed the car on each wheel. I'm running a set of Hot Dogs at the moment and they still are going well after a high country trip, Tassie and several trips to Lidsdale and 60.000 km

I am thinking of a set of OME as I was impressed with the ride with Richo Last year. He seemed happy with them.

Above all - enjoy the trip. Its great.
I can confirm what Corigator had to say as I went up with him. He seemed to do it easy and when it came time to replace my much loved Disco 2 it was this experience that convinced me to go with the 120. Put on some Mud or A/T 265/70/17s , spend the money for a snorkel, do your checks and water seals and all will be good. Both of us made it up without using the chicken tracks but it all depends on the conditions.

If its after season i.e early October pre wet they will be gradering the road in sections so not too bad and if you go slow should be ok depending on your load. Two years ago we went up in October and managed between 80-100kph on the development road most of the way..Going out to Weipa was a different story! the road from Bamaga to the tip had been graded and we could do easy 90 kph the whole way so guess we got lucky, the worst section was 30kms prior to the ferry. My 2007 GX D4d had 2 inch Dobinsons the only issue to arise was approx 3500kms later when the top of the shock bolt sheared off, the mechanic in Wigham NSW showed me the shock and the rock damage it had sustained was incredible, but this was also after the Meerini loop road in central australia also so cant speak more highly than of the Dobinsons range. I would upgrade. You got the right tyres for the trip, made it all the way around Australia (60000Ks) on the KOs AT even with a canvas repair plug in one. Got the KO2's now and would feel very confident about the cape with those on and a suspension upgrade.
When I did the Cape in August 2012 the PDR was rubbish and corrugated as hell. My front driver's side shock lost its oil that trip. My friend's GU Patrol slightly bent one of its rear shock shafts (EFS). It was really bad in sections but for that trip the worst sections were 30km or so south of the Jadrine River as well, and also 10km or so north and south of townships. But in July 2015 when we went back the road was recently graded. Most of the PDR was like a highway. Beautiful to drive on. The worst bits were like the better bits from our previous trip. One big thing we noticed in 2015 was there was heaps more bitumen laid on the PDR than there was in 2012. Prob heaps more again now than there was in 2015. It's a shame really, but the locals will be happier since they have to drive on it more regularly. In the not so distant future the Cape will be easily accessible to front wheel drive hatch backs..... Yay... Not!!!

We drove at 100km/h with 18 Psi in the tyres (32 inch) in 2012 from 20km north of Laura onwards for the rest of the trip, not by choice, but by necessity. Bone jarring.... We lowered down to 32, then 25, then 18. 18's my sweet spot for all off-roading now.
Good functioning shocks and shock absorber bushes are a must. As are good tyres.

Mate that is seriously over speed for 18psi!

Was that a one-off or do you usually stick to the 3 x PSI rule?
                  Cheers

It's completely safe & believe it or not but I'm actually quite a cautious person. I've done that on the two Cape York trips I've done, so what would that be, 1,600km or more at highway speeds on the PDR during those two trips. I also did that from Normanton to Burketown along the Sevannah Way and it's one rough rocky road. We passed two 4wds on the side of the road during that trek who shredded their tyres the poor buggers. Would've been running too high pressures I suspect as its rare to see people shred tyres let along two within 30 mins of each other. 18 psi is 100% stable on corrugated roads and feels very safe. You can stick to your 32 or whatever (which is too hard) but don't knock it if you haven't done it and therefor unable to comment from experience . I also have travelled up and down 75 Mile beach on Fraser Is at 80km/h with those pressures many times. You just use a little common sense and don't corner overly hard like you're on Dukes of Hazard and on the run from the county police.
I got the car airborne by accident on the PDR in the Cape at 100km/h when I hit a dip in the road with a full payload. The suspension compressed and then launched me out of the dip with all 4 wheels at least 6 inches off the ground. When the car came back down it compressed really low and then launched again with full power of all 4 springs and shocks rocketing the car up at the same time and the car bounced around majorly for a little bit before it stabalized again. If that didn't test it to its near limit then I don't know what will. It was a little scary when it happened because it was really unexpected, but the car tracked perfectly straight during that episode and felt like it had a good handle on it when it happened. I just took my foot off the pedal immediately and held the steering wheel hard and straight as soon as the innitial launch happened.

If you're running 17 inch rims with lowish profile tyres like the 120's tend to be fitted with, then no, I would not run 18 psi in them at 100km/h because I think that would be a dodgy thing to do.
My tyres are over sized LT construction at 32 inch and on 16 inch rims that have much higher side walls than what the 120s have as standard. If I had radial tyres that suffer side bulge and squirm at lower pressures I wouldn't drop them down that far at that speed unless I was keen on increasing my chances of having an accident.

If I did that on Cooper STT's (100km/h at 18 psi) then yes I see your point and it would be dangerous, but lucky for me I would never use them.

                        Not 2" lift, 40mm

Front 555mm max length, even less than my old Bilstein 712's (560mm) Not suitable for a lifted Prado, it will top out.

What reason was the choice made for the lifted Prado suspension go from a fair length strut to a short strut?

Sorry for my figures as this lifting is mentioned as 40mm in the guide book.

Reason for choosing short strut is, honestly, I don't know why they chose this set-up. I spoke to a mechanic a few times about my intentions of the CY travel and corrugation etc, and they recommended this set-up to which I agreed.
I have attached the photos before and after lifting.

Pretty sure everyone in this thread is just adhering to "bro code" and trying to help you justify mods to your missus

I made it there and back in a bone stock factory standard 90 series RV6 back in the day... Just sayin'

Would it be easier and more comfortable with lockers, snorkels, spotties, winches, and IFS suspension? Sure. Do you need those things to get there? That's another story
