  • 120 VX versus 150 GLX?

    Hi guys
    I'm new here.
I'm in the market to upgrade my 1999 90 Series 3.3lt petrol, which I love BTW.
I'm torn between a 5-speed auto VX 120 Series (about 2007ish), or a GLX 150 series (2010ish). My budget is about $25k max.

I'm leaning towards petrol as we won't be doing a high number of km per year (mainly a Mum and 4 kids local city commuter). I have heard there's issues with diesels if you don't do a high number of km per week/fortnight; the DPF gets clogged and you have to go out specially to drive for 30min once a fortnight to heat the engine up enough to burn off the particulates from the filter, otherwise a filter change and big $! I don't want to go out for a drive fortnightly to burn off the DPF! Also diesel doesn't evaporate quickly so if you get it on you at refuel time it hangs around... Wifey won't like that. Also I don't do towing. Finally, maintenance may be more expensive longer term...
All that said was a result of my research, I'm keen for real world feedback.

So what are the pros and cons of a petrol 5 speed auto 120 VX vs an auto 150 GLX?!

120 VX pros: lots of airbags, very nice inside, colour screen radio with full connectivity, (reverse cam?)
120 VX negatives: poorer fuel efficiency (13.5lt per 100km), older

150 GLX pros: lots airbags standard, full connectivity radio, a bit bigger, good driver assist tech standard, better fuel efficiency (11lt per 100km), reverse cam (?), newer
150 GLX neg: More expensive, heavier, less manoeuvrable than a 120

    Thank you

I've had both and I kept my 120 longer (Still have it) than my 150.
Id be staying with Petrol, and depending on what tyres your running affects your economy, I used to see <12.5 around town and 11 Country. (4.0 V6 Petrol).
Short runs in a diesel will be costly and kill it quick. DPF on a 2010 isnt an issue from my knowledge? I dont think they came out on prados till >2015.
VX will have the rear air which is a must for rear seat passengers. Way too hot without in summer.

A younger car is always good however for resale etc. You haven't stated Kms on both vehicles your thinking of?

I'm after the lowest km per the price: $25k max. I really coudn't countenance anything more than 175000km, prefer 100k km-150k km.
I thought the only reason diesels weren't good in low km city usage was the filter issue, what are the other issues? You've reenforced my view re getting a petrol for low km city usage.
      Cheers

Definitely the V6 for city use.

There is no DPF in the vehicle range you are after.

VX 120 and GXL 150 both have rear aircon. I believe the 150 has slightly better safety features.

NO. The 2005 VX has all of the safety features that are currently found on most of the current models. I had a 2005 VX V6. Great car. I now have a new 150 2.8 diesel GX .Also great car. For your use I would go the V6 and not have to worry about all of the injector/ blown motor possibilities of the D4D diesel you are looking at. The VX are a bit scarce on the ground but definitely worth the money over the GXL of the same vintage. Low KM, few trips, no towing: the V6VX is a no brainer for your use.

...or if you find a GXL 120 series from late 2007 onwards, (which you can) then these also have the rear A/C fitted... (because my late 2007 GXL does!)

Thanks guys. I went with the 150 GXL. Found a nice 2012 88000km. Most 120 series options/VX are standard in GXL for 150 series. Especially rear cam and 7 airbags. Happy days!

Hi rabidman, I'm in the same situation as you. How much did you end up paying if you don't mind? As prices seem to be all over the place, I'm unsure of what is a reasonable price now!

                      Thanks
