  • Kurt's 2013 150 Kakadu

I've got a lot of really useful info from looking through the other rig builds on even little things like a photo of something in particular that you're trying to understand. So while it will be far from the most exciting build on PradoPoint, I'm posting my build, in particular for other Kakadu owners where there are a few extra considerations along the way.

So I bought a 2013 Prado 150 Kakadu D4D (pre-facelift). Picked it up late in 2016 with 48,000kms on it. Black one - terrible for keeping clean and hiding scratches, but it passed the wife test and I do like the look of it too.

Here's the blank slate - the photo from the dealers ad.

The Kakadu is an upgrade from a White 2004 120 series Grande 4.0L Petrol. The 120 series was great, had a lot of good times in it but just decided it was time for something a bit newer. Here's the two for a comparison though, for old times sake.

First addition was a roof rack. I went through many of the same thought processes back when I put a roof rack on the 120 Grande - in particular about how long I wanted it to be. The dilemma between having extra length in the roof rack but obscuring the use of the sunroof, or having a shorter roof rack. On the old Grande I had gone for a longer roof rack - an 1800mm long Rhino Rack Pioneer Tray, mounted on a leg kit (ie. removing the rails). The rack was great, primarily used for camping. The sunroof would open and close fine, but if you looked up through the sunroof you were looking at the bottom of a roof rack, and if you opened the sunroof at any decent speed you had pretty substantial wind noise. This time I went for a Rhino Rack Pioneer SX Platform, 1528x1236. SX is the version that fits onto the existing rails, rather than removing them and using a leg kit. With the shorter (1500 long) platform there was only the SX option available. I also got a Front/Side rail kit which was my way of feeling like I had additional safety for the load in sudden braking situations - coming from the tray to the platform it made me feel more comfortable. Having said that, the Front/Side rail kit causes some limitations which the shop pointed out to me but I decided were workable eg. it gets in the way if you want to have some of the side mounted brackets eg. for a maxtrax bracket. The Rhino Rack Sunseeker awning from my 120 Prado was moved across to the Kakadu as well. Supply and install was done by Roof Racks Galore at Kedron in Brisbane who gave great service and were very knowledgable on the options.

      Photos of the end results

Once I started driving around with the roof rack I found I had a bit of wind noise including a whistle. I'm ok with some wind noise, but the whistle was annoying. Basically as soon as you were at about 50km/hr or more, you'd start to get a whistle. If you opened the sunroof completely, the whistle was loud enough that you needed music turned up fairly loud to outdo it. If the sunroof was closed but the interior cover was not (ie. you could see through the glass) then the whistle was loud enough that you could turn the music on at normal levels and it would make it disappear. If the sunroof was closed, and the interior cover was closed, then you could not hear the whistle.

The whistle turned out to be the Front/Side rail kit. With persistence there may have been ways to resolve the whistle, but Roof Racks Galore confirmed that it was installed as per Rhino spec. So in that state, it whistles. It's fair to say that if you didn't have a sunroof (ie. Kakadu or Altitude) this would probably not be noticeable. Roof Racks Galore helped out by taking back the Front/Side rail kit with a small restocking fee to cover the pieces that had been cut at install.

The bonus of taking the Front/Side rail kit back off is that I no longer have the limitations around some of the side brackets, so that was a bonus. I've just accepted that I need to ensure I tie down properly which lets be honest is a good idea anyway!

I spent a bit of time on PradoPoint looking at towbar options. In the end I decided to go with Wynnum Towbars. Very happy with the results.

Reversing sensors do beep (ie. there's nothing in the wiring that disables them when you select reverse) so you need to turn them off or put up with the beeping. Turning them off is pretty quick so I didn't see that as a drama. The Wynnum Towbar is neater than the others overall I felt - I was comparing against genuine Toyota and the Hayman Reese. It's also a good strong build, and to top it off was the cheapest of the ones I was looking at. The guys at Wynnum Towbars still have the same price it seems they've had for something like 10 years - $600.

The only unexpected thing was they have a bolt underneath which is used to tighten up the fitting overall so that it stops any rattling. Other than that it was pretty much as expected based on other pictures on PradoPoint. No cutting required to the rear bumper.

            End result photos are below.

Another early addition was the Kaon half height cargo barrier. These things are perfect for what I need. They are marketed as a pet / light cargo barrier, and I presume are not rated to the same australian standards as your Milford cargo barriers and similar. My needs however are for dogs, and for bulky but fairly light gear (eg. some camping gear). The Kaon barriers are quick and easy to fit and to remove, which is great. Basically you leave brackets under the grab handles in the far rear section, and then removing the barrier entails two knobs in the back, and removing the middle row seat headrests (which is where it attaches at the bottom). Don't have a photo at the moment but will post one another time.

I also considered the Rail for Rhino rack on my 2010 Kakadu but decided against in the end. I am yet to do the Towbar but will do in the future as I want to get a camper trailer some point. Interested in those pics of the cargo barrier installed. I was looking at one of the ones that look like the seat belts are made from more of a net really.

Not sure when I'll put it back in again and take a photo as I only use it if I'm loading the back up a bit. In the meantime there's some pics you can see here on BobCrusader's build - scroll down a bit within the first post in the thread at http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...highlight=kaon. That's actually where I found out about them in the first place.

You can also see them at http://www.kaon.com.au/store/p4/Prad...t_Barrier.html

I had considered a net style one as well, but when I looked around really find one that fit quite like I wanted and looked strong enough. Then I came across the Kaon and liked it. I did actually see a net one somewhere on PradoPoint a few nights ago that looked like what I'd been thinking of originally, but I can't find the link again now. The advantage with a net I guess is that it packs away better inside the car when you aren't using it. I didn't see how easily it attached but I would think they could attach at similar points to the Kaon to make one quick and easy. Given the choice I'd go with the Kaon again over a net. The other thing with the Kaon is if you want to mount anything such as a fire extinguisher to it you could do so where you can't with a net.

Speaking of Kaon, I was offered a set of Kaon bash plates tonight by a friend who has just traded his Prado. He'd only just put them on 5 days ago, then suddenly made a rash decision to buy a new cruiser and did it quickly before he changed his mind No luck for my Kakadu though - looking at the Kaon website it looks like they're no go for KDSS vehicles. Checked out a few other bash plates and it seems they aren't the only ones. According to websites TJM, Brown Davis, and AMTS (he looks to have stopped making them anyway) don't support KDSS. ARB and Ironman don't state either way on their sites. BushSkinz seems to be the one that does actually make different versions for KDSS and non-KDSS vehicles. Might have to dig through some of the other Kakadu and VX builds and see what people have settled on.

Have any of you from Brisbane used TJM at Hendra? If so were you happy with the work they did? Same question for ARB at Northgate/Nundah.

Looking at a few bits and pieces done (probably some TJM and some ARB) and they are the closest locations for me. For TJM in particular I see lots of people on here talking about their great experiences at TJM Brendale, but I don't think I've seen a single mention of their Hendra store. I'm prepared to drive a bit further for good service if need be, but won't if I'm comfortable the closer guys do a good job.

I have the Bushskinz plates on my V6 KDSS equipped Kakadu. As far as I know the diesel version will also fit, it's just the shape of the transmission plate that is different.

Pretty sure ARB and Brown Davis are KDSS compatible. I will probably go for the bushskins myself when ready. I used TJM at Nerang wasnt the greatest experience though it wasnt for lack of trying. I do like that barrier. I found the one I was looking at also http://www.toughtoys.com.au/products...o-barrier-net/

They do a net for up in the roof also which would be handy

On the Brown Davis I'm going by their website at http://www.browndavis.com.au/product...s-4-piece-set/, it says no-go with KDSS. Sounds like the Bushskinz might be the go. The barrier net looks ok - would be good to see one fitted in a Prado to get a feel for how well they fit the size and attachment points.
