    How guys
Some advice needed from the group does this sound like an Alternator needing replacing or somthing else?

I'm getting my redarc SB12 clicking out when the car is crawling around 4wding in the last few months thinking not much of it until my trip it was getting worse when ever I stopped for a min to two clicking out then in when I moved off

    Yesterday I did some testing

Battery main 12.7v cold no start and rear battery 12.6v cold no start all good there

I have the diode from Leigh installed

Time to start car with multimeter on main battery and 14.2v all good and rear battery 13.8v.I let it warm up 10mins and 14.1v happy with that, I then placed load on it with headlights front and rear aircon on still 14.1v that's good

So test on road time driving around 14.1 14.00v OK happy again

Next I pull up to a stop and 13.9v I think turn on air con and lights and this is what happens watching volt reading in cabin it starts to drop right down to 12.8 then I hear redarc click out and I read 12.5v.I then put the car into park and volts rise back to 14v with lights air conditioner on OK strange.i head home and in garage with car hot at about 90c when all this happens I then test again same results this time in drive I held the brake and slowly increased the revs and it goes from 12.5 up to 14.1v with revs around 800rpm to 1000rpm ????? The car in drive sits at about 550rpm
My Prado has just ticked over 200,000kms V6 been great till now I'm thinking it's the original alternator is or has failed no dash light on and tried with duel battery connected and not no change
Any advice and if I just replace it what brand to go with

    Thanks
    Ben

The alternator can only produce around 50% of its rated power at idle, if
your drawing more than that the voltage will drop.

Still if this has only just started happening then it would seem something
has changed, 200000 is getting up there if the alternator has been serviced
    before.

The charge light will not come on as long as the alternator is producing some charge,
the only way to know if the alternator is faulty is to do a load test, ie put a clamp meter
on the alternator output cable and load it up by turning on accessories and see how it
    goes.

Note crawling around on hot days can raise under bonnet temperatures and this can cause
the alternator output to drop though as you indicate the volts come up once you increase
engine RPM this would not seem to be the issue.

      Thanks Leigh for the reply

I also cleaned up all the earth points with some sandpaper and changed batteries and no change

Cut my loss and will put in new alternator me thinks...
