  • Changed AT fluid A750F with Penrite

    Hey everyone.

    I just recently changed my AT fluid in my 2006 D4D 5sp 120 Prado. Just wanted to share my experiences.

    Used Penrite ATF LV. I didn't end up changing the filter for 2 reasons. I would have had to wait a few weeks for one from Japan (as per local Toyota service centre). Also, as it's a mesh filter and not a 'comprehensive' filter like an oil or air filter, I didn't think it was necessary. My understanding is that the mesh filter is just there to catch large particles that may break off as a result of the casting process during manufacture. Anyway, that's my reason. I'm sure others will disagree. Yes, as I didn't drop the pan I didn't clean the magnets.

    Did the full flush thing by draining pan, hooking up cooler line, starting car etc. Finished off with checking the level by jumping ports 4 and 13 on the diagnostic thingie. Ended up using about 10 litres before fresh fluid came out. Also moved from park through to D when flushing it through. I'm not sure if this flushed more or less old fluid out.

    There is a major difference now. The gear shifts are much faster and crisper on both upshifts and kickdowns. Car has 230,000 km and I don't know if it was ever done. The old stuff was very black and smelt burnt. There weren't any sparkling metal particles in the fluid which was good.

    I've just driven around the suburbs and based on this, I can recommend the Penrite ATF LV as an OEM WS replacement. Haven't taken it off road yet but will report back once I have.

    Cheers,

    Daniel.

    PS. What I found very interesting was that I measured what came out each time I started the car and replaced the exact amount. When I put the car into diagnostic mode and pulled out the overflow plug, nothing came out! I ended up putting an an additional 750ml before fluid dribbled out of the overflow!

    Hey Daniel,

    I've been using the Penrite ATF LV for a while, it gives silky smooth changes straight after the flush!

    Have a look here about replacing the pickup screen;

    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...F-transmission

    That screen is there to catch broken down oil, the pan magnets are there to catch any metal.

    When the ATF breaks down it forms fine sticky organic colloids that can potentially block that pickup screen so badly that you'll starve the torque converter of oil. You can see a small amount of colloids in the photos in my thread, and I changed my oil within weeks of the auto hitting high temps, so the longer you leave it the more colloids will clog the screen.

    As you've done a lot of km's and your oil was black and definitely burnt, I'd recommend changing the pickup screen. Use Amayama UAE, they're the cheapest, and it'll usually hit your door within 10 days or so.

    The additional 750ml you added is not uncommon. Sometimes it's because a lot has burnt and broken down, sometimes it's because shifting around gears while doing the overflow will force some oil back out. If you left it in park it may not have been so much.

    Check that pickup screen!

      After reading this, I am now looking at using the Penrite.

      Did you guys compare the cost of the Toyota WS fluid to the Penrite ATF LV?

          The filters are readily available from Repco for about $70 and include new pan gasket. Measuring each little bit expelled is a waste of time. Just keep starting and flushing, stopping and topping up until the pan overflows, then repeating the process until you get a nice clean looking colour. Then run her up to temperature whilst stationary, run through the gears, and do your final top up and level check. Easy.

            We live regional and local dealer had a filter and pan gasket in a few days. Glad I did it as there was definitely a film of stuff on the magnets and the pan.
            I used Penrite and am very happy with it.

                Might buy a 20L of Pentrite I think. Flush the lot out.

                  12 ltr will usually do it but if you can get a good price on 20 then you got some spare for next time.

                    Went offroad for the first time since the change. Like on the road the changes were faster and crisper. This is great for low range through the hills as there are a lot of gear changes. Definitely good stuff and will be using the penrite lv again in future.

                      I found this which may help some, it explains the fluid change, good if you are replacing the filter like I plan to.

                        Just went through the exercise of flushing the transmission, forget the filler plug and crawling
                        under the car to fill, use a tomb thumb and make up a small adaptor hose to join it to the
                        return line.

                        Bushbasher, I think you'll find if you don't put the transmission in test mode using the link when
                        you run through the gears your only flushing out 1st and reverse. I personally couldn't be bothered
                        with test mode as I really don't think the small amount of old oil left in the system is going to have much
                        impact.

                          How did you push fluid down the return line? Gravity through a funnel or using a drum pump?

                            The fluid will just drain into the transmission so you could use gravity but would have to dribble it down,
                            I used a tomb thumb pump.

                              Ok Thanks. I might give it a shot with a drum pump to speed it up. The standard hose length that came with my drum pump doesn't reach the filler.

                              The drum pump is 17 pumps to a litre so I should be able to pump in new fluid as the old is coming out with the engine running.
