  • 2010 VX Prado harsh ride

Hi all google has landed me here as I see lots of informative threads regarding the Prado suspension. Hoping people can help with some advice. I have just bought a 2010 VX with just under 100 000 on the clock. The problem is the ride seems way too harsh. A friend recommended I get a Prado as a replacement for the Ford Territory that we killed over nearly 6 years. We live fairly remotely so each trip in this new car is a long one with our shortest trip out being around 400km. The first 120 km consists of 100 km of gravel. Then bitumen after this.
As I stated the ride seems very harsh compared both with the old Territory and also compared to other Prados. The friend that recommended a Prado also delivered the car to me about 1100 km from here. He has had a number of 150s as work cars and has 120s as his personal cars. He was dropped at the dealer to pick up the VX in a 2014 GXL. He says he didn't get far before pulling over to see whether something was wrong as it was so harsh. He put it down to the Kdss and thought if that's what it's like I don't want it. Have people noticed a harsher ride compared to standard ?
I know it is supposed to limit body roll and help with wheel travel so not sure if this is the problem or not. The tyres are Goodyear Wranglers. Pressures were around 38 and I dropped them to 30 for a marginal improvement. The problem was probably worse on the bitumen with every bump being felt through the whole car. It got to the point that I could spot bumps in the road that we would feel. The corrugations on the gravel were just as bad with the back end stepping out a few times at around 90kmh. The territory would just glide through about 15kmh faster and sometimes have the traction control light flashing. The only things that felt half ok were the really big holes in the road about the size of a car and 3 or 4 inches deep.
Anyone have any suggestions ? We drove it to Perth nearly 1000km away and around the corner was its twin of unknown year. I was trying to think of a way of getting them to come for a ride to give their opinion without sounding like a serial killer but I could not think of a way of asking. I am currently rather disappointed as almost everything you read about these comments on their boat like handling, I have more of a billy kart.

    Hey Seeker,

You didn't specify, does the Prado still have the original OEM suspension on it, or after market?

And if it still has the original OEM suspension do you have it set to Sport or Comfort mode?

It still has the OEM suspension. I am not aware of it having sport or comfort mode settings. I thought only the Kakadu has the different modes. I may be wrong on this though. I have no problem going aftermarket if needed but I am a little scared as it is currently fairly uncomfortable so don't want to stiffen it up anymore.

Perhaps the ride with the OEM shocks/springs/colis might have had their day. I have a VX also and it had a new OME lift kit installed over 6months ago and the ride is smooth. You can drive a few hundred kms and get out feeling like you haven't been in the car at all.
Everybody has different opinions and you may want to get it independently tested. If you love the vehicle and keen on keeping it for several years it may be worth upgrading.
          Cheers.

Thanks Carmelo. I haven't had much to do with Prados before so I was trying to see if it was common for the KDSS to feel rougher than the other models. What difference did you feel with the upgrade both on and off road. Whitey has driven my stretch of road and is putting together a quote for an upgrade.

              Hey all,

Can anyone with a 150 VX with KDSS please confirm if there is an electronic override feature that is fused?

Can we also confirm that there is NO mode selection on the struts/shocks, as they are not actuated like Grande or Kakadu struts?

                Hi Seeker,
There is noticeable difference and I would estimate 20-35% increase in ride comfort. There was hardly no roll before the upgrade and it seems to be smoother and stable even more so now. I have airbags in the rear suspension so depending on how inflated or deflated they are, will depend on how many bumps you feel, but not overly noticeable.

Whitey, I don't have a mode selection on the struts/shocks for the 2012 model. Perhaps the later models do. With regards to fused electronic override feature, I'm not sure.
                Cheers.

What are the suspension heights: bottom of rim to the wheel arch?

                    Thanks Carmelo,

That rules out the struts/shocks being stuck in harder sport mode then!

...anyone ever had to replace a KDSS fuse??

You could be right, I assumed the VX had the TEMS shocks like the Kakadu. If there are no leads that go to the top of the shocks then they aren't the TEMS ones.

Also own a 2010 VX - The KDSS is a purely hydraulic system with no electrical components aside from sensors. The KDSS will not have a stiffer ride as it only tightens the sway bars around corners. The issue is the 18inch rim size with less profile makes for the harsher ride. No you can not drop the rim size. I did go up a size on the tires and went to LT spec being much better.

Get an on board compressor, bigger tires and keep the pressures lower on the gravel.

I did upgrade with a lift and old man emu suspension which helps with comfort. Do NOT use old man emu for the VX though as they do not provide unequal length springs and will cause you headaches. Dobinsons would be the go for KDSS
