  • Quick build - need to make a call on wheels/tyres

    G'day Guys,

First post on the forum but I've been lurking for a little bit doing plenty of reading - a lot of great info on here so thanks to all the contributors, you've already helped me make a number of decisions.

I'll be picking up a brand new GXL in the next couple of days and I'm doing a very quick build up on it as I need to move out West in two weeks (currently in SE QLD). I'll post a more detailed run down in the build up section when I can show some progress, but so that you guys have an idea of where the rig is headed, below is a basic list of some of the work to be done within the next couple of weeks, with plenty more to come over the coming months.

    2017 Prado GXL - 6sp Auto, Graphite
    • Upgrade stock tyres and potentially wheels - more on this below
    • OME BP-51 Suspension upgrade with ~2" lift
    • ARB Summit Bar, side rails and steps
    • Rhino Rack - Pioneer Platform or Tradie (still deciding between the two)
    • Safari Snorkel
    • Driving Lights, UHF, etc

My time constraints have influenced a few of my decisions for certain components, however I'm happy to fork out the cash at this point to get everything sorted quickly and properly.... much to ARB's delight.

Now to the point of this post, one of the first jobs while waiting on the bar work to be colour matched will be tyres and wheels. I've been trawling through this section of the forum for a day or two and I've finally got my head 90% around wheels and tyres, but I'm still chasing clarification on a couple of things.

I'm leaning toward Mickey Thompson ATZ P3s in 265/70 R17 for a couple of reasons:
    1) I've got a few mates running them and they're all very impressed with their performance;
    2) I'm not pushing the legality of lift + increased tyre diameter too far
    3) They'll fit fine on the stock wheels

In saying this, I would like to throw on some flash matt black wheels and I'm struggling to find something I like to suit the tyres as MT state the maximum rim width to be 8.5". (Love these, shame they don't come in the correct specs - http://www.fueloffroad.com/vapor-d569-w-19188.htm )

So, questions I'm still pondering over:

Anybody running the same size tyre and have some suggestions for wheels? 17"x 8" E20 in case I go to 275s later on maybe?

Will a 265/70 R17 look a bit small with heaps of space around the arches once the lift is done, and if this is the case should I be looking at something slightly larger in diameter? Bear in mind for this vehicle I'm after a reliable yet capable 4wd moreso than a rock crawling, off road weapon. My '08 Hilux had the big lift + big tyre treatment and I'm not interested in going down the custom UCA, drop diff etc path for this build. I'd like to do things once and leave it alone as best I can.

Side note: how common is it for tyre dealers to take trade-ins to offset the cost of new wheels/tyres? I'll have a full set of brand spanking stock wheels and tyres that will likely have less than 100km on them, so if I can simply trade them in for replacements it'd be ideal.

    Thanks in advance,

    BT

Anybody had success with CSA Raptors? They come in a 17 x 8 E25.

265/65R17 in the factory tyre may look a bit small for a 2" lift. But dress it in BFG KO2 and the sidewall pattern will make it look better.

For touring, best to stick to original size for fuel economy and power. Otherwise 265/70R17 is a good size up without having to change rims.

        Hi,

I went to 18's on my GXL even though tyre selection is limited, still has plenty of choice for my requirements. I went for Incubus Supernatural but they don't do the supernatural anymore but have other choices. My guy (Tempe Tyres) trades wheels and tyres but with a Prado the rims aren't worth much due to size and offset and the fact not many owners change them

Thanks REN470, I'm heading down to my local this morning and will have a chat. I think I'll stick to 17's as it can certainly help having a few options when you're living in Western QLD.

In case anybody is interested, I emailed Mickey Thompson customer support yesterday and got a reply this morning. The rep confirmed that a 265/70/17 P3 is an acceptable fitment on a 9" wide rim. So this opens up plenty more options.

            Cheers.
