  • Alloy or steel underbody protection

I am doing some home work on what Bullbar, and underbody protection to get.

AFN web site says 6mm alloy and all the others are 3mm steel coated in alloy.

Anyone used alloy as underbody protection? Anyone use AFN ? Or should I just stick to Brown Davis?

My first question is do you really need any more underbody protection? 3mm steel will add quite a bit of weight. While I don't go out rock climbing, I've travelled extensively offroad and have never felt the need for more under body protection. Of course you and others may have different experience.

I ended up going with 3mm steel from Tin and have smashed the absolute shit out of them. Still going strong after 12 months.

        Hey,

Aluminium alloy has low fracture toughness and will crack and shear too easily if impacted. You can't fix that easily. At least with steel you can hammer it and bend it back into shape and weld it if necessary.

Steel is much better for underbody protection.

          same,

Qutie easy to install yourself, a second set of hands makes it dead easy.

Tin's kit is 350 steel. This is far superior to 250 steel which a lot of companies will have made theirs out of. Ships are made of 350.
