  • Prado new or old

    Hi,

I am in the market to buy a Toyota Prado. After extensive research over the past few months and scouring around I have come across a Prado Kakadu MY14 with 52,000 km on the meter sold by a reputed dealer for $67,000(negotiable) . I was wondering whether it's a good option on buying this against a Prado GXL MY16 or MY17 for around the same price .
This is the first time I'm buying a car(4x4) and personally a huge investment and I'm looking to keep it for a long time. I average around 10-15 thousand kms a year with 60% city and 40% highway/offroad driving.

It would be great if you guys could help me decide. Looking forward to your response.

    Cheers,
    Karan

Toyota are also about to release a special edition Altitude in the next few weeks. This is a limited run, which is based on the GXL but has some VX / Kakudu features such as Moonroof, DVD, ETC. You can read about it in this thread:

    http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...uestion-please

I have been trying to get more information, but it's a waiting game.

I thought this might throw another spanner in your works, but it's best to have all options and information on the table when spending so much. If you are anything like me, it's a lot of money and a big decision.

The other thing is that a new model may be released as early as the end of this year, so the GXL will get more features with the updated model. And all Purchases before then will be instantly outdated and depreciated somewhat.

The older 3.0 Diesel engine (Pre Oct 2015) such as the one in the car you mention, also had a reputation for some problems with injectors etc, so maybe best to hinge your bets on the 2.8 if you are getting a diesel.
Maybe the 2.8 will have issues as well, too early to tell yet. Not sure if anyone else knows more than I do.
    I hope this helps anyway.
    Rich.

Yes, I'm also considering the Pajero which is a lot more cheaper. Any thoughts?

        Pajero is a good vehicle.

All vehicles have some issues. Pajero has a monocoque body, no chassis like the Prado. Not the end of the world, but the Prado has more strength, but depends where you will take it. Some have had issues with bullbar mounts failing, breaking the front beam. Pajero has completely independent suspension front and rear, no banjo housings like the rear of the Prado.

Pajero is also being cancelled, so used prices will probably fall faster. That might be a good thing if you want to buy one...

I just posted this in another thread, but perhaps it is more suited in this one:

I'm just wondering what other real alternatives there are to a Prado...
I've been test driving, the Isuzu MU-X neither my wife or myself consider to be a real alternative to the Prado.
Heard too many negative stories about Jeeps to consider buying one, so that pretty much excludes them...Same with Ford Everest.

The Fortuner Crusade, as much as we like the exterior, don't like that brown interior. And if you are paying 65K for a car, I think a nice interior should be an option.
We have even looked at Subaru's, but for those times we want to go offroad, they would not take us there (Fraser Island etc).
Any other options people can think of?

            I've owned a 2010 Pajero and currently own a 2016 GXL.

Get the Pajero and pocket the change. I reckon its a better engine/ drivetrain, a better laid out cabin that's just as good quality and comes with a similarly-sized dealer network and 5 year warranty. It's also more comfortable to drive. The four main reasons I went GXL is
            1) A little bit of 'get the best' envy
            2) I need the 6th/ 7th seats - the Pajero's are nearly useless
            3) I wanted to modify it a little more for better off-roading
            4) Re-sale value

A bonus is the long range tank ($1300 on the Pajero though after-market). I love the Prado - it's awesome for what I need. But it sounds like your off-roading is local/ dirt roads and for that the Pajero is awesome (and it can do far more than what people give it credit for). For $59K you should be able to get an Exceed - that's what I was pricing it against (bought the Prado for around $61K from memory).

I think the altitude is good value for money and we did look at them but for touring here in wa the tank is too small because the spare wheel is under there, love me 150 litres. But I wouldn't think that would be as much of a consideration for people on the east coast.

I like the Pajero but I don't see a lot of 'em on the road. Is there a reason why people buy more Prado's than Pajero's?

I think there is a new Altitude coming in. How many litres on an Altitude?

That is actually quite decent. Do you think I can negotiate it down to around 58k for a new one?

You can probably get a GXL at the minute down to $59K - but you will have to act quickly. I was quoted $59 recently for a stock standard white one.

Do you think it would be a good idea to wait until EOFY. Around mid June or something? Or after June. What's better?

I have had my Prado GXL for 1 year and very happy with it (even though I have yet to use it on many of my touring trips planned - which is where is really shines)

One factor about the Prado that does not get much air play is the build quality. IMHO the Prado is a major step up in quality of finish and parts from brands such as Mitsubishi, Ford and similar, but also even noticeably better than the Kluger and Mercedes products. Just have a look at things such as the boot area, sun visors, switches and exterior panels/plastics. It seems that being Japanese made still has some key benefits.
