  • Servicing on the road

To those of you lucky enough to be able to tour the outback for extended periods - what do you do about keeping up with servicing on the road? Carry 5l of oil and new filters or just make sure you plan to pass through a major town at the right time?

The one minor service we have done whilst travelling was done by a dealer.

It was the one place we needed to be at the right time as we booked it in before we left and 5 weeks later when we arrived they thanked us for booking in advance as their next free appointment was in about 8 days.

Always prepared to do it myself. Sometimes, trying to get a service done on your schedule can be difficult. Best to book ahead and guarantee a date if you want it done in a work-shop.

Thanks guys. I always used to do my own roadside services in the Kingswood days but was motivated more by poverty back then and didn't have a car full of kids & ARB merchandise.

In general, is it easy to find a decent mechanic in places like Broome or Katherine or is it better to hold out for larger cities (Darwin, Cairns etc)?

I have some friends that do seriously long group trips overseas in their car ( sadly not a Prado ). Currently the cars on on the ship to Bangkok and they are heading off to London via Beijing! They set off with newly filled gearbox and diff, and carry the equipment to change their own engine oil. They carry the correct number of filters for the trip and pick up oil from the major cities along the way as the change mileage is coming up, and change it themselves. They usually stay in the same town for 2 nights on the service day, even though it takes less than an hour.

Where or how do they dispose of the old oil?
