  • Dealer Service?????

    Hi Guys,

    I've had a 2016 2.8 Kakadu for about a year now from new. The last two services i have completed have been at the dealer under the cap price servicing. For all my previous cars i have used a mobile mechanic who comes to my house and does the services - while the price wont always be guaranteed like the cap price servicing i seem to trust him more. My question is, is there any benefit getting your car serviced at the dealer instead of an independent mechanic?

    Also, when my car was relatively new (first service had just been done - approximately 8,000kms), driving along the hwy, the inter-cooler house slipped off because it wasn't tightened properly, has anyone else experienced this?

    That last point is why I'll never take it to my local Toyota. I understand all are different - so I am not dissing all of them. But mine gets paid the $220 for the service (same as you, 2016 Prado), makes no money and has a 1st year apprentice on it to cover costs slightly.

    From after the 1000km check up (which took around 7 minutes) I've gone to an independent since new (Berrima Diesel). You do that - like your mobile bloke - then you know that every time they do something, it's their reputation and their job on the line - not some huge organisation. A little paranoid, perhaps, but if you find a good mechanic to do the job, then stick with him/her I say.

    Only thing - make sure they use genuine stuff. You bring it into Toyota for warranty and they spot an after-market fuel filter, then they can start causing grief.

      I thought that dealers were subsidised by Toyota for doing the capped service? I am following the service schedule to the letter as I would expect Toyota to use any excuse to escape liability from a warranty claim. Perhaps I am being too harsh? (2015 GXL)

      It has always seemed crazy to me that a service is due every 6 months even if the vehicle has done very few kilometres. I suggested this on the Toyota owners forum and was quickly shouted down with comments such as "oils go off" I responded by asking if a new vehicle had it's oil changed before sale if it had been in the showroom for 6 months.

        I dont trust dealers for the above reasons. For the past two new cars ive always taken them to my trusted mechanics. The only thing i think it can compromise is applicability for an extended warranty but as soon as my warranty is up i can start using less toyota branded parts ( filters, injector replacements, throttle controllers etc). That could be a misnomer on my part but meh.

          Your correct.

          Oil go off, lol.....Save argument & just change oil. Stick to log book service every 10,000k.

            Thanks for confirming, I shall certainly be doing the services myself as per log book once the warranty has expired.
