  • Recommendation for new suspension

    Hi,

I recently got a service done by local Toyota dealership and one of their recommendations was to replace front ($1395) and rear ($376) shock absorbers as apparently they are starting to leak.

Given the cost I figured I could go external to Toyota and get better parts for less so if possible could you provide a recommendation for suspension replacement.

Its 2010 TD Prado, Cooper A/T 3 tyres with 99% of driving done around City/Suburbs. I rarely tow anything and I like the current ride feel. No roo/bull bar and no basket on top.

What would you recommend and approx how much would it be.

    I like in Perth.

    Thanks

At a guess, I would suggest go anywhere but a Toyota dealership as it would be an improvement.

        I have a set done 20,000klms.
P.m me if you wish to discuss your options.
I could send those, or you might want to upgrade.

          Hey Rhino,

Investing in used shock absorbers is a false economy in my opinion. You'll just have to change them out again sooner rather than later. Even if you get them for free, you're just putting off the inevitable.

You are the rare case that you do 99% city driving, you don't have any heavy accessories, your vehicle isn't lifted, and you wish to preserve the ride feel. On this basis you could keep your OEM coils (assuming they aren't terribly sagged) and just change your struts and shocks.

You can get Bilstein monotubes which use identical valving to the OEM struts and shocks, BE5-A712 struts and BE5-A713 shocks. You can get front and rear for under $1000.

Then you will have the exact same ride feel and those monotubes will last you a lot of city kilometres, potentially several hundred thousand.

However, you should also keep in mind that many complain about the "boaty" OEM suspension on the 150, as the OEM valving did not change from 120 to 150, but the front coil rate was dramatically increased on the 150 (from around 620lb/in on 120 up to 780lb/in on 150) to cope with the heavier kerb weight. This resulted in a big coil rate mismatch between front and rear which leads easily to vehicle pitch due to mismatched frequencies, and the front struts are well under valved to handle the stiff 780lb/in coils. The rebound in the OEM rear shocks is also very low and the valving won't cope with more than a 200lb/in coil.

You may then wish to improve upon the OEM valving and coil rates of the 150.

A more plush city/on-road setup with only a moderate lift could also be the Koni RAIDS with King standard height coils, 88-1712/90-5404/KTFS-101/KTRS-102. These Konis will also last you a very long time. Have a mate with this setup in his 120 and it is a city Prado, very comfortable driving Prado. That setup will be expensive though, more like over $2000.

Any other after market suspension you get will have stiffer valving and generally stiffer coils and it will change that ride feeling quite a lot.

I went to local 4x4 shop who suggest the following setup:

                Bilstein BE5A712 & 24-238830
                King Coils KTFR-121 & KTRR-102

                Thoughts?

Is that the wrong coil for non KDSS models?

Yep, the -121s are the wrong coil for non-KDSS models.

                          Hey,

Better struts and shocks to be had as well!

The 712 is just a copy of the OEM valving, higher rebound versions such as D563 are more suitable for off-road conditions. Same applies to the 24-238830, it is a mid-rebound/high-compression shock suitable for a mid-range coil rate. B46-1478LT and 24-217897 are much better shocks for the rear both valving wise and length wise.

Have a squiz at the Bilstein database if you haven't already!

                          http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...hs-and-Valving

                          Also have a look at the suspension database;

                          http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...nsion-Database

That will give you a good starting point for selecting your coil rates, which will be accessory dependent.

Hi Whitey, thank you for sharing all your knowledge and was an amazing reading as I'm knew to the prado too. Got a 150 GX 2014 and put a ARB bar with dual battery. Now when I'm on an emergency braking the car tend to drop the front a lot and the tires slide. I was assuming that my brake was not good enough but now think that the springs and suspension need to be upgraded to support the front weight. So do you think it's the way to go and was looking for DOBINSON/BLISTEIN quoted $2,100.00 the parts below. Do you think it will make a difference?
                              Thank you in advance
