  • What i have been told is an engine failure

    Hi there Gents.

A few weeks ago i was travelling on the Hume on my way back from NSW to Melbourne and prior to travelling on the Hume on some of the back roads i could hear the turbo wind up more then normal one hour into the highway drive all of a sudden the Cruise Control switched off and black and white smoke started coming out from the back and just as i got to the service lane the engine sounded like it was over revving and then a massive continuous knock in the engine until i switched off the engine. The car was towed back to a local town and i had the car diagnosed and they told me that piston 2 has no compression and in their view id need a new engine. The car is a 2010 d4d GX serviced every 10 000 without fail by my mechanic and every 5000kms by me which i change oil and filter etc. I then had the car looked at by my mechanic and he said piston 2 had only 10psi and that he thought my engine was gone as well. Is it possible the engine to seize that easy i always put Caltex Vortex Diesel and look after the car as i do lots of trips to NSW etc. Does anyone know how much another engine would cost and if i should even take it elsewhere maybe to a Diesel expert and see what he says etc. The car has 190.000 kms on it at the moment. What are your thoughts? Ive been told to get a proper answer they'd need to take the engine out and see how bad the inside of the engine is is that correct or should i just save my money and look for a new engine if the outcome is the same etc.

    Thank you

I would recommend you have a look at this thread... http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...a-holed-piston
And then order a new long motor.

      Another case of of D4Detonation...

It really does annoy me that this keeps happening and seeing new people to the forum complaining of the same Toyota fault.

I'm just grateful I found this site before buying a Prado. Keep spreading the word.

        .
It's one of the reasons I went for a petrol when I bought the 120 last year along the the great reliability of the old 90. Was talking to a bloke at the servo the other day with a 2010 d4d and just asked him if he was aware of the problems and what to look for to make sure it didn't happen. He was completely unaware of the injector/oil pickup issues so I gave him the basic rundown and told him to come to this site and school himself before it became expensive.

classic case of diesel runaway , where the engine runs on its own crankcase fumes till it self destructs. Its not quite the same issue that other D4D engines have , but one of the related causes. motor wont be repairable , time for a new long motor as others have mentioned.

Welcome to the D for detonation club. Sorry for your loss. At least you were near civilization when it went unlike mine out in the desert.

Just another couple of questions if you guys don't mind. Is the new 2.8L Prado any good or are these injector issues still a worry. I'll have to have a look at the service history to see if they were changed at 120.000kms as i bought the car at 121.000 so only now with a bit more knowledge on these cars am i thinking they weren't etc. I'm a bit upset with previous mechanics ive used too not picking it up but such is life.

Just for the future too im from the S/E suburbs in Melbourne can you guys recommend where to take my car in the future. Maybe Diesel experts or just people with a good reputation but most of all thorough mechanics more than anything. Cheers

Sorry to hear of your dramas mate. So much for modern diesel reliability. The 2.8 will have issues in the future too and most of them will be related to the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and then the injection system. It's not going to be a vehicle you want to buy secondhand.

Hi, I’ve just had a similar issue with a prado 2012 gx diesel, auto, 300,000km, apparently an injector has failed and done a piston or vice versa causing total engine destruction.
Quote of around 18k for a new genuine Toyota engine and turbo, water pump gaskets etc all fitted at Toyota.
It comes with a 2 year parts and labour warranty.
Reconditioned only appears a few grand cheaper.
It’s a beautiful car otherwise with a few nice extras. Probably worth around 30k in current market before the damage.
                    My questions are
how much would I get for it as is? 10k-15k? Less?
how much would I get if it did have a brand new engine?
How do I prevent this happening again? Extra fuel filters? Upgraded pistons?
I now know I would get my injectors checked and replaced more regularly as I haven’t had them done in the 100000km I’ve had it.
Is a recon nearly as good as new or just spend the extra?
And being 10 years old with 300k on the clock what other expensive items will likely go in the next few years? Diff, gearbox etc?

Dont know whether to count my losses, live life on bitumen for a while and buy a Kia, or fix it and keep it forever.

Like to hear some opinions or people that have had a similar situation and what they’ve done.
Also if anyone could point me in an experts direction in Perth
                    Cheers.

Went through the same saga at 170k. I put a new Toyota long engine in, which has different pistons. For me it made more sense to keep the car because the car is great condition and has lots of extras, each to his own.

                        Thanks Krypto,
I am definitely thinking I’m going in that direction. It’s a beautiful car with some nice extras, and soon to be brand new motor. Should get a lot more years out of it. Did you do anything to help prevent this happening again? I’ve read of people installing secondary fuel filters and someone recommended installing an EGT to with alarm to monitor heat in cylinder?
Im not much of a mechanic but it would be nice piece of mind mitigating the risk of another mishap.
                        I’m open to any suggestions

The key thing that causes pistons to crack is poor design of pistons combined with towing and/or chips. Some info that explains everything

                          1. Mechanics of piston failure

                          2. EGR contribution to piston failure

I run an extra fuel filter to protect the injection system, it doesn't prevent engine failure. I also have an EGR delete to reduce the overheating around cylinder 1.

Standard D4D eating its own pistons.. Speak to D4D engines Australia, likely your best and most cost effective way to repair. Unless you can get Toyota to come to the party. Some have, Some Havent.
