  • New Starter Battery Recommendations

    Hi Guys,

The original starter battery in my 2012 GXL is getting a bit tired and it is time for a replacement.
What is everyone using at the moment?

    Thanks,

    Hi Sako,

Last week, I changed my Starting Battery with BOSCH SMT Mega Power Plus and Deep cycle with BOSCH AGM BAC12-100R and going well.
Please note that some members are has stated that the AGM battery shouldn't be within the engine bay as heat will kill AGMs.

    Thanks
    Selvan

      Thanks for the info.
I was considering an Optima yellow top however read the quality may have dropped off?

I bought a boat a few months ago on the cheap that had one these Bosch SMT mega batteries. It had been sitting around for 12 months and the battery was completely dead. I was fully expecting to buy a new battery but I put in on the charger for two days and it came back to life and has been great ever since. Couldn't believe it. Next time my Prado battery craps out I will switch to one of these. It seems to have great CCA and great deep cycle capability. And they're not expensive. Not sure of the heat stress in the engine bay though. In the Pilbara nothing lasts no matter how much you spend.

My Optima yellow top died after almost 4 years, wouldn't hold charge anymore. I ended up getting the new Century Overlander MF, easy decision $250 for the Century $400+ for the Optima, both will last 4 years...

SuperCharge Gold Plus for the vehicles, and SuperCharge SeaMaster Gold for the boats.

For reference my original factory fitted battery has lasted just over 4.5 years.

I've been running an Amaron.. (Indian brand). Since December 27. 2010....
                  bright green casing.
Has had its fair test of flattening. And survived it all touch wood.
Been more than happy with it.
Even after leaving my compressor on when I didn't use the vehicle for 6 weeks and it ran about every 4 hours due to an air leak.
Pulled close to 20A each time. Ultimately it flattened totally to 0 volts. But a simple recharge a few weeks later and it's been fine since!
I was dubious but have been more than happy with it.

Got a new battery for the 150 D4D today. Century Overlander extreme (N70ZZLXHD), 735 CCA and a bit of reserve capacity - good all rounder according to the spec sheet. Best of all found a cheap few at Every Battery in Ringwood - they are on sale! If you need a new starter batt and are nearby, have a look.

There was nothing wrong with the performance of my OEM battery (7 Years old!), but it was leaking from being overtightened previously so time for a newie.

Just bought a Optima Red top D34R yesterday. Hoping to keep the weight down and recharge times short. $270 delivered.

The best battery(s) I've ever had were the Odysseys. I use a PC1700 as a starter/winch battery in my camping car. It just goes and goes and goes....

That looks like a great choice with the extra thread terminal bolts a real bonus, wish my battery had them.
