  • New tyres - but something ain't right: steering wheel vibrates, strange noise, pulls to the left

    Hi guys,

Recently bought a used Prado GX 2013 (new facelift model) that had about 50,000 km on the clock and still had the stock tyres. Needless to say, the tyres needed replacing and that's what I had done about three weeks ago.

After a lot of research on this forum, I decided on a new set of BF Goodrich A/T KO2 in the standard size, i.e. 265 65 R17.

Went to Canberra over the weekend and this was in fact the first time that I drove the car at speeds over 100km/h since changing the tyres, and that's were the trouble started:
    • Steering pulls to the left (not crazy, but definitely did not notice this prior to changing to the new tyres)
    • There is a lot more "slack" in the steering wheel now before the steering reacts to the input
    • But when it does, there is also a lot of vibration being transmitted to the steering wheel. Feels very weird.
    • Lastly, there is also quite a bit of noise. While expected with a more aggressive tread, it's actually not a constant hum which I had expected but more an up and down in frequency, kinda like this (excuse the pathetic attempt at illustrating the sound): .∙'∙.∙'∙..∙'∙..∙'∙..∙'∙..∙'∙..∙'∙..∙'∙.

Now, from all I know, this is not normal and probably indicates a problem with the wheel balancing - especially because this problem did not exist with the stock tyres. Suspension is not changed (completely stock).

That said, I've never had A/T tyres, so can someone please confirm this is not normal before I complain with the dealer who fitted them? I would assume I should ask them to fix this free of charge?

Many thanks for your help, guys!

    Cheers,

    Dex

make them rotate them to start with and see if one has a bubble in it and it moves to the back many a tyre joint has blamed the car and blokes have start looking at replacing things that aren't rooted. The first thing tyre mobs do is blame the car when its just started doing when the tyres went on I've had that fight b4.
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

        Thanks for confirming, guys.

Will have the dealer take a look at it this weekend and report back when done.

Just a quick update: took the Prado back to the dealer twice in the last few weeks. They redid wheel balancing and alignment, and also rotated tyres.

Didn't help. Symptoms are still noticeable, albeit slightly less than before. I'm now worried there's something wrong with the tyres.

What's my next course of action? I'm a bit lost.

Pradosteve, you mentioned "see if one has a bubble in it". What exactly am I looking for?

Could be the harmonics from the tyres you've chosen.
Do they have a chunkier tread pattern?

Yes - I went from the OEM Dunlop set to All Terrains. I do understand that those would be noisier, but I didn't think they would affect handling to such an extreme degree? It still doesn't feel right to me.

What exactly do you mean by harmonics?

I have the same tyres and size on a 2016 GXL. The car tracks straighter than most cars I have had previously, so I would suggest your wheel alignment is causing this.
I also find the tyres as smooth and pretty much as quiet as the stock tyres.
A vibration in the steering wheel will be the front tyres out of balance, vibration in the seat will be the rear tyres.

If you didn't notice anything before changing the tyres then that would indicate they are the cause. Tyres normally get noisier as the tread wears down, so I would have thought new BFG's wouldn't be any noisier than worn stock tyres.

Make the dealer go for a drive with you and confirm the noise and vibrations are not normal. If they say it is, get them to take you for a drive in a demo to show you.

Thanks for confirming that the tyres should perform differently.

I like your suggestion about the test drive, but the only challenge is that the shop where I bought them is reasonably far from any freeway or highway where you can legally go 100 km/h (it only becomes really apparent around this speed), and they are therefore reluctant to go on a test drive because it takes them too long. I guess I'll have to push for it regardless.

What is confusing to me is that they redid the balancing twice and the wheel alignment once. They are a specialised tyre dealer and also specialise in 4WDs, so I don't understand why they still haven't got this right after three attempts. Is is really that hard, or did they sell me faulty tyres?

I have had BFGs for years and they have always been pretty quite. They have been easy to balance and tend to keep their balance well. My guess is that one of them is slightly out of round and they should be able to spot this on the balancer [ but maybe they don't want to because it will mean replacing the tyre.] If they don't give you joy I would be looking at another tyre shop to do the job. Which part of Sydney?

Shop's in the Northern Beaches, but I'm not local to that area (just bought from there because they gave me a reasonable price).

Yeah, I might have to go to a different shop but the trouble is that they would then obviously charge me for the balancing and alignment. Given that I've paid a nice sum of money for 5 tyres, I would have hoped that I would be getting a perfectly balanced set that handles as well if not better than the stock tyres.

So I think I'll give them one more chance to fix it, but failing that I will have it checked out by another shop. I'm really worried that something is wrong with one or more of the tyres, but as you say the guys who sold it to me wouldn't have any interest in admitting as much. Sigh.

If you have any recommendations for a decent shop who know their stuff, I'm located in the inner suburbs.

                        What are the rims?
                        What's the tyre's manufacture date?

Rims are the original Toyota ones that came with the car. As I mentioned before, did not have any issues with the stock tyres, so would have thought the rims should be fine?

Not sure about the manufacturing date. Will have to check tonight when I get home and report back.

                            Hi,

Your first post said the first time you'd driven the car over 100 kms an hour was after you put new tyres on, then really you don't know if it's the new tyres or the vibration was there all the time as you didn't drive it at that speed with the old tyres on - Doh? If a tyre has an issue the tyres shop would just replace it he would be covered by the manafacturer he wouldn't want to be do wheel balances and alignments 3 times. I don't know why we have to jump on shops as the first answer when you don't even understand your new car and your not comparing things equally. Some of the opinions here are very disappointing - one bloke said go and drive the dealer demo - did he not read you bought it second hand and it has 50000 kms?

Follow-up: Manufacture date is 0916, which I take to mean the 9th week of 2016.

What would you conclude from this?
