  • Is my interpretation of Diff/Transfer oils and torque correct ?

Been a while since I posted here.

I have been going through the many threads on how to do this service, been doing engine oil and filter, fuel filters and basic stuff every 5000km since new, now been doing the minor services myself. I was meant to do the Diff oil at 120k and I'm now at 130k due to month around Tassie. So I've been a bit slack.
Did the engine, filter and fuel filter today and had the brake fluid done a few weeks ago. All greasing of prop shaft, bolts and general inspection done too.

Just want to run this past a few of you to see if everything looks in order before I do the Diffs and Transfer case tomorrow. Unsure of correct torque on Drain and fill plugs ?

EDIT: Found this thread, very similar to the 150 https://did-it-myself.com/05-toyota-...se-oil-change/

Grabbed 2 sets of washers for each from Toyota and a oil filler syringe.

Front diff, I cracked these 2 allen bolt head screws today with a 1/2" breaker bar and hex attachment, just in case I was going to have trouble... all is good to go on these.
Oil - 75-85, Torque on plugs at 49nm

Rear diff, fill and drain plugs need a 24mm socket.
Oil - 75-85, Torque on plugs at 49nm

Transfer case, fill and drain plugs need a 24mm socket.
    Oil - GL-5 75-85, Torque on plugs at 49nm

I realise there's a few topics on this already, feel free to merge if this is bugging anyone.

I think the torque on one of the front diff plugs is different. I'll see if I can find it.

The front filler plug is 39nm.

        Thanks Fridayman, much appreciated.

Found a few values last night for the other two. Might not be 100% but what's the worst that can happen... a damp spot , i'll keep an eye on them for a drip.

They will have new washers and a small amount of never-sneeze on the threads.

        FD fill - 39nm
        FD drain - 49nm
        Transf fill - 27 ft/lb (37nm)
        Trans drain - 27 ft/lb (37nm)
        RD fill - 36 ft/lb (49nm)
        RD drain - 36 ft/lb (49nm)

The thread has had 90 views, so hopefully my fluids are good or someone would have said something.

        Cheers PPers.

Just check the diff oils on the Penrite website, I believe the diffs require the GL5 not the transfer.

Just out of interest what oils you using for diff and transfer case.

Progear GL-5 For the transfer case and the regular 75w-85 for the Diff.

Yes Mick, its been a bit vague to be honest. I have read threads here where people had used the normal (^ 2 x 2.5L bottles above) for both Trans and Diff. Then another where someone said that the Transfer was strictly GL-5.

Thats why I posted here to see if everything looked ok.

Just checked the Penrite data deck, according to that for my 2013 V6 its GL-5 for the front and rear diffs, I doubt the diesel would be any different. Its also interesting they do not show a suitable oil for the transfer for the 150 Prado but they do for the 120 models, makes you wonder if there are any differences in the transfers?

                Regards...Mick

You need a EP (extreme pressure) gear oil regardless for the front and rear diffs, this is from penrite website

                        Hey alternative,

Just curious as to why you didn't use the Pro Gear 75w-90 for the transfer case, which is the specified viscosity range?

This is also API GL-5 compliant.

Mark, It was just something I read on here. Wasn't 100% on what should go in there due to it being Transfer and centre diff, so bought the GL-5.

The syringe came from supercheap, they didn't have a pump there as that's what I was looking for.

The neck on the 1L bottles have a pull out tube, so it was easy for them, the 2.5L meant lots of syringe pulls... just gave me a creaky neck.

                              I agree.

                              If you go here:

                              https://toyotamanuals.com.au/docs/la...aug-09-sep-11/

you can find the service details in the manual.

Diffs are 75-85W GL5 (Pentrite bought out a FS equivalent to this last year)

Transfer case is same an manual gearbox oil, 75W, denoted as "gear oil LF" (or low friction). Pentrite told me the reason they dont have a listing for this is Toyo give a single viscosity, not a range.

These are the same recommendations as for the FJ cruiser. I drained the original factory transfer oil and changed it.... its definitely a very thin, low viscosity oil.
