  • Intermittent low oil level warning light issue.

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with an issue I'm having my the oil light coming on in my 2005 V6 Prado Grange.

Firstly the car runs fine, but after driving for about 3 hours continuously the light will start to flicker and within the next hour it will stay on constantly. If I stop for a while, eg a coffee break, it will stay off for a long period but eventually come back on. The oil level in the car is fine and it doesn't appear to use much oil between 10,000 Klm changes. I've had the sensor replace twice (the 2nd time was a factory part) and although it seems that the issue takes longer to reappear after a change, it has not been fixed.

I had one other issue recently when after driving for about 6 hours (one stop for lunch) I slowed the car from 110 to 60 as I drove through a town and it cut out entirely (oil light had been on and I looked down to find all the warning lights on as the engine had cut out. I restarted the car without problem and stopped in the town for coffee. When I got back in after about 20 minutes all was good (no warning lights) for the remaining 90 minuted drive home.

This engine cut out has only happened the once. The car does not do a lot of long or short trips but on the weekend I drive for 70 mins to an event and returned several hours later with no issues at all. As I'm planning a road trip for a few months over winter I am a little concerned with this issue. The car is due for a minor service so I'm considering taking it to Toyota for this and to see if they can diagnose the problem. Any thoughts on what the issue might be?

    Regards

I'd be getting a reader plugged in to see if any codes are in memory.

If it is not the sensor, maybe it is the oil pressure.

The light may be coming on because the oil pressure has dropped.

In my old BJ73 Cruiser I cracked an oil line and the drop in oil pressure caused the engine to turn off and I saved the engine. Maybe the 150 does the same thing.

Maybe the low pressure light is telling you to Test your oil pressure.

Maybe pump failure, a faulty pressure relief valve or a faulty filter.

Does the 4.0L V6 have an actual low oil level sensor? I thought it just had a low oil pressure light. What is the oil change history like on your engine? If it is the oil pressure light coming on I wouldn't be driving it, i'd be removing the lower sump and investigating. You don't want to find sludge.

Going from recent memory and travel interstate last year. Prior to me doing a Simpson Desert trip from WA I have an intermitted light come on and this was after a higher engine rev situation (EG overtaking another car and going past 4500-5000rpm) the light would then flicker and or stay on for a little bit. From there I did a oil pressure test and everything looked good, did a oil flush and engine flush and had no issues for a while, then the next couple of services I ran through the engine oil flush just to remove any solids.

It wasn't until during my trip I managed to suck a lot of water into the engine which in turn screwed it but what was most alarming is when pulling off the sump the sludge and build up within the engine was massive so after reading the issues on this forum about oil pickups etc that would be my first stop.

Get your mechanic to remove the oil pickup and clean it ASAP. next few services do them @ 5000km's intervals.
