  • Prado needs new shocks

    Hi All,
    Quick question, our 2010 120k Prado needs new shockers. Hubby and I are lost as to what kind/type to get. I have tried to research but feel like I am wading through mud. Any help will be greatly appreciated. We live in Coffin Bay and regularly hit the sandhills and surrounds for fishing and camping.

      Hey Loeysmob,

      Coffin Bay, nice part of the world down there!

      Suspension is a complicated business, but when you boil it down, there's really only two ways to go in my opinion, big bore monotubes, or big bore twin tube hydraulics. Both work extremely well in Prados when you set the valving and coil rates up correctly.

      Off the shelf Bilstein/King or Bilstein/Dobinson combinations are very good in the monotube department. Your choice of coil rate will be accessory dependent, but a good starting point for you would be BE5-D563/KTFR-101/B46-1478LT/KTRR-102. This is one of the best off-road valving/coil rate combinations you can put in a Prado. Slightly stiffer on-road, but that is the price you pay for off-road performance.

      In the big bore hydraulic department, in long travel terms you're limited to Ironman Foamcell Pro hydraulics. These are a very heavy duty high oil volume shock which are made for off-road punishment. Everything is bigger, oil volume, body diameter, shaft diameter. The rears are 90 series geometry, truck sized shocks. Replace the struts/shocks above with 45710FE/45682FEC as your starting point.

      Also, don't be afraid to mix and match. I currently run a D563 monotube up the front, and a custom valved 45682 shock in the rear.

      For researching the Prado suspension geometry, valving and coil rates, take a squiz underneath the last table in the Suspension Database, and you'll find over 20 threads describing everything you want to know about Prado suspension;

        Whitey I know you have written on the unsuitability of the Bilstein A712/A713 for lifted prados, but what do you think of these for a car with a small amount of lift (20-30mm) used for on-road and outback touring but not necessarily serious offroading?
        cheers

          Hey YNSUP,

          There was a time early on for Prados when sales folks only knew about the 712/713 combination for Prados, and there are still heaps of 120 Prados driving around today with this combination.

          It's only recently with a lot of valving dyno runs that it's been established that 712/713 are just copies of the 120 Prado OEM strut and shock valving.

          With this knowledge, and the fact that we now know there are far better valved Bilstein struts and shocks for close to the same price as the 712/713 combination, there really isn't any need for anyone to run the 712/713 combination anymore.

          You can get away with the 712 on the front for what you describe, but you'll always struggle with the 713 in the rear. The lift isn't the issue, it's the very low rebound in the 713 which gives poor kinematic control of the Prado. The rear shock you put in is the most important suspension component in the Prado. The IFS motion ratio on the front severely scales the valving at the wheel position, and yields limited critical valving, only around a practical 15% Ccr is possible. This means all of the kinematic control (body roll, pitch etc.) of the Prado comes from the valving in the rear shocks.

          If you haven't already read this, the valving differences are explained here;

          Hope this helps you in the right direction!

            Is this a 150 series? Didn't think the 120s were made after 2009 since my 150 series is a late 2009 build.

            Only asking because this thread is in the 120 section, don't want you getting incorrect advice for your model.

                Hey,

                I'm guessing it's their first post and they perhaps weren't sure where to post, and they have a 2010 150 series Prado with 120,000km on it.

                My discussion above applies to both 120 and 150 Prados.
