So yours is a mine spec vehicle I guess? To have headlights on during day.

It would have a control box somewhere most likely if so for the DRL.

How did you check fuses? Sight or multimeter ?
Sometimes a fuse can be blown and look fine. Only a circuit tester will show it.

I would suggest your next step is find someone who has techstream or a plug in tester.
This will allow a live view and you can test each switch and item in the car.

Or you could try replacing he clock spring with an ebay special to see if that is indeed the issue. It would more likely be clock spring rather than stick.

Another way would be to unplug the cruise stalk and test the plugs for voltage as per spec diagrams.

You can use the 16 pin OBD connector to use the engine lamp in the dash as a code reader, IE, it will flash a code sequence relating to a codes stored, unfortunately I cant remember the pins to short out to get this to happen, and also I cant remember the codes. I can have a look this eve and re-post tomorrow.

With the clutch switch, if you get your head under by the pedal assembly and its quite you can hear the switch activate, will be just a little click. Best practice is to test with a multimeter, its probably only 2 wires, 1 common, the other a signal so straight forward.

Question. When you turn cruise on, does to show you a green lamp saying Cruise on in the dash? This is just to turn it on, not to set it BTW.

Nope cruise doesn't turn on at all, i.e. when you push the end of the cruise stalk in no light appears on the dash.

So dont worry about the clutch switch or brakes etc, you should still see the green light come on, it just wouldnt set. I know you have said you have checked the fuses, did you use a test light or meter to check both sides of the fuse, visual is not good enough unless 1 has blown and even then can be hard to spot.

I think you will need to look to see it there is voltage present at the cruise switch, not forgetting the ground too. Im sorry, but I dont have a diagram for this.

Ah ok that is helpful thanks, I didn't realise the cruise light would still come on if the clutch switch or brake lights were faulty.

I have only checked the fuses visually, I don't know how to use a test light or meter but will look into this. On the topic of fuses, is the ECU the fuse that is responsible for cruise control? I could not find a dedicated fuse for cruise control.

            Thanks

Sometimes the list on the fuse cover doesnt detail exactly what the fuse protects. Look in your handbook as it will list the circuits that are protected from each individual fuse. I doubt it will be the ECM fuse as you should have other issues if this is blown.

BTW, if the fuse is ok, it doesnt mean the voltage is being received at the switch, like stated earlier it maybe the clock spring, but I wouldnt replace this on a guess.

It's great that you've nutted this out so far and we all now know that the green light, cruise on, is not coming on at all which throws all our other ideas in the bin. Yeah, like others mentioned the clockspring would be the next port of call. Start the engine and with the car in park, and turn the wheel full lock both left and right slowly while pushing the cruise button numerous times and see if the light flashes on at all. If it does then it's the clockspring unit for sure.

The clock spring failure is a common fault for the cruise. As an analogy to an old school clock's winding spring, it's essentially a flat ribbon cable wound around the steering wheel column that carries the signal wires for the various buttons on the steering wheel as well as the air bag trigger wires and horn. As you turn the wheel one way, the cable tightens up and when you turn the wheel the other way, the cable unwinds. It's all contained in a plastic housing that can be removed and replaced if needed and aftermarket ones are available too. The genuine Toyota part is expensive. They call it a spiral cable.

The Techstream software and ODB cable will also help a lot to nut this out.

                  Cruise control not engaging

Still need to confirm if the cruise fuse is ok.. by a meter. Or replace the fuse with another to test.

Turning wheel above isn't guaranteed to work. My clock spring didn't rectify itself momentarily with this method.

Clock springs can be found in ebay for a tenth of what Toyota want. And look like they came from the same factory in my case.

I'd still be checking fuses properly and/or getting a live code viewer plugged in before anything.

                    Hi Frazzy_goreng.

What was the end result in the cruise control not working? I speak on behalf of many people I would think here. So many clever people aid advise without any conclusion? This excellent forum and the people that write in can made better with the end results of any problem being documented.
So please let us help you by telling us the failure.

                    Cheers.

I gave up in the end. I'm going to ask the mechanic to have a look when I take it in for its 130k service.

If he cant fix it then I'll try an auto electrician I guess. I feel like it could be the clock spring but I'm not game enough to change it myself as it sounds like you have to fiddle around with airbags and things.

                          Solved!

It was the clock spring, bought one off Ebay for $75 and had an auto electrician fit it for $110. Pretty big saving considering what a dealer would've charged.

Just a question, when putting on the cruise control and you go down a hill, does the Prado automatically use it's brakes or does it rely only on engine braking?

It will down change if steep enough to hold speed but it usually goes over the speed set by a fair bit first.

                              No not doesn't use brakes.
