  • Mounting Surface Pro 4 in 150 with Arkon Mount

    Hi All

I recently purchased a Surface Pro 4 and a dual XGPS160 bluetooth gps to run OziExplorer on. I'm still trying to tame the XGPS160 and I'll start a separate thread once I sort it out. Now I'm trying to figure out how to mount it in my 150 Prado.

I have done a search and there are several options. The RAM mounts are very nice but expensive. I've been given instructions not to alter the dash so the great in dash mount I saw somewhere is out of the question. I'm not keen on suction mounting on the Windscreen as I've had a couple of bad experiences with my phone dropping off on potholed roads.

So I'm considering a seat mounted gooseneck which I can swing it towards me when I'm driving on my own or towards my passenger when I'm not. I have seen a really nice system in an F250, but there is enough room in the cab of one of them to hold a footy Grand Final. After way too much time on line I came across this http://www.arkon.com.au/arkon/tab188l22-arkon-tablet-mount-22in-flexible-gooseneck-seat-rail-floor-mount.html

I did see in a post by Borec http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...ighlight=arkon that he was considering this option. So rather than reactivate a year old post I thought I'd ask whether anyone is using an Arkon or similar seat mounted tablet holder?

    many thanks
    BigPat

    Hi Bigpat
Just checked out the video from the link above.
Seems to me that the flexible goose neck might move around quite a bit when on the rough stuff.
The equipment its self looks to be good quality.
    Cheers Troy

I've used both RAM and Arkon.
Personally I'd go RAM over the Arkon as in all cases it's proved it's worth.
The Arkon is effectively a copy of you ask me.

How much is too expensive for RAM?
What parts did you need? I've got access to their gear.

        Hi Piggy

        Thanks for the offer.

I think this is the RAM equivalent http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-316-1-UN11U

My only concern is keeping the Surface Pro secure. It was expensive enough in the first place I don't plan to buy another one in the near future.

        regards

What about Industrial Evolution? Here's a post about using one for a laptop in a Landcruiser dual cab ute:

That link you've given is RAM USA. Meaning with freight your cost would be roughly $185 (US Dollar) $243 AUD.. inc US shipping
Locally Aust bought you can expect to pay around $190 inc shipping.

I can maybe get around $40 off that, depending where you live, as may need double shipping to and from my warehouse.

The X mounts are good, we use them on our motorbikes/ Quad bikes and Polaris side by side buggies which get beaten to hell when we are out hunting.

Those gooseneck mounts, what's the wobblefactor?

Very minimal. Mine sits between seat and console so I padded it with a bit of foam. It doesn't really move at all.
The gooseneck is a piece of solid annealed alloy. Bendable but not floppy.

I've got the Ram post mount that screws to the seat mounting point and it's terribly wobbly. The problem is the mounting bracket at the bottom - the aluminium post wobbles in the bracket. I don't have any better ideas at the moment so will probably use an ocky strack to pull it into the transmission tunnel and keep it still on our next big trip.

Did you tighten the lock screw? I've got same in a number of my vehicles and no wobbles.

Made it as tight as possible. Then replaced it with a high tensile bolt to make it tighter... Then filed out the gap a bit to make it tighter again. Still wobbles... It's like the hole sides aren't parallel but tapered - holds tightly on one end but not at the top.

Odd. Ram has a lifetime warranty. Maybe get onto where you bought it and ask for another.

Same experience I had with the RAM Pod No Drill Vehicle Mount Universal, i found it wobbled, the surface is just too heavy.
In the end I ended up with an hybrid, which is not ideal, but it works. I used the RAM Universal X-Grip® Cradle for 12" Tablets, which I bought together with the RAM Mounts (RAM-B-316-1-202U) Pod I Universal No-Drill Vehicle Mount with 18" Rigid Aluminum Rod and Round Adaptor Base. This combination did not work and wobbled too much. So I bought Delkin Fat Gecko Triple Mount and used the RAM cradle on it (the balls are not exactly the same size, but it works).
I have done Fraser Island with it, and it did not fell off the window once, even after I got airborne and all other stuff fallen off. It was not an cheap solution, but unfortunately there is no cheap solution, as the surface is heavy (and I have it in a case too, which is heavy itself). It does sit bit high, and makes access to aircon controls difficult, and you cannot see the time/temperature either. It obscures your vision a bit too. It is a bitch to put it on properly, but once it is on, it does not come off. You can take the surface easily from the cradle, but the whole suction structure needs to stay for the whole trip, unless you fancy spending some time every time putting it back on.

There are three different bits here. Sorry for the bad quality, it was done quickly with an iphone.

                              The RAM tablet holder.
Part RAM flat adapter base that came off the Universal No drill vehicle mount
Delkin Fat Gecko Triple Mount, where I have taken off the actuall camera adaptor and replaced it with the RAM flat adaptor base. The rod on the Gecko is of slightly smaller diameter then the original RAM, but it still fits
