  • ARB Compressor Issue

    G'day all,
Having a little issue with my ckma12 mounted in the AMTS bracket and hoping someone might have some insight before I commence a massive fault finding day.
It started not long after original installation. It will pump up a couple of tyres fine, then after a couple it will not turn on when clipped onto the valve stem. I then will turn it off and on again at the switch and somewhere between 2-5 switchings of the switch it will work.
It used to do it every so often but now it is doing it more often and getting annoying. When it pumps it pumps fine.
I'm thinking it may be some sort of bad wiring? I wasn't too convinced on some of the solders I did on the thicker wires but other than that, I'm stumped.
Can anyone suggest something for me to try?
Also if I wanted to re-run the wires for the compressor does anyone know if it is easy to replace the + and - cables entirely to minimise the amount of joins required?

    Cheers

Not sure if related but I found the plug of the main power wiring in the process of melting. I'll be changing the connectors for a Deans connector which can handle the current.

Apart from that, check the switch, relay and pressure switch.

I'm thinking some of my solders may have been super dodgy. I struggle bigtime with thick wire.
I'll get the multimeter out and start probing!

What did you have to solder? I don't remember soldering anything.

Where is your switch mounted? Check that it is functioning correctly by probing the contacts at the rear.

My pressure switch failed meaning it would not operate! Cheers

Hey jimmyC, might be your fuse resetting.

I used to plug my compressor into a rear Anderson plug that auto electrician wired up.
Problem was, it only had a 20 amp auto fuse. He thought I only wanted power for caravan/boat so 20 would be enough ( dumb f#%k).
Wired a 50 amp Anderson plug myself coming out of front grill. Now no problems at all.
20 amp kept resetting. Thought it was my compressor too until he checked what he'd done. Sounds just like your problem. Would work for a while then switch off, wait a short time then would work again.
Ok doing one tyre but any more and problems started.

Just an idea, may not be you're issue.

I shortened the wiring loom that ARB provided so there wasn't heaps of loose wire. The switch is connected to the bracket on the switch mount provided with the bracket. I might go for a probe when i get home!

Sound like what mine is doing in my work ute (Ranger), plug it in to the anderson plug at the towbar, runs for a bit then cycles out and light goes out on switch, then fires up again!

After some investigating today I think I've found the issue.
I pulled the whole assembly out and began testing items one by one.
                    - Removed + of compressor so I could hear relay click. On turning on the switch the relay would click on. I then turned the switch off, then back on and the relay DIDN'T click this time... issue. Turned off for 30 seconds and turned on again and relay clicked.
-Connected + and - directly to the compressor bypassing fuse, relay, pressure switch and switch. Worked fine (Don't worry, I connected the open air hose so it wouldn't overpressure)
                    - Checked switch with multimeter, all ok.
                    - Tested relay by connecting signal wire direct to + on battery and - to battery and worked fine.
Deducted issue must be the pressure switch (no idea how to test it with multimeter)
Bought another pressure switch from ARB but same issue continued... Search continues.
Started cutting off heatshrink and found one dodgy looking connection, where I had tapped off a + feed to go through the switch/pressure switch/relay circuit (trigger wire as it's also known). Jerry rigged a temp fix and all perfectly functional now.
Plan for tomorrow is to rewire the whole system so there is no possibility for this to occur again. Planning on attaching the relay to the AMTS mount itself on the same side as the compressor. Has anyone done this before? Does the heat cause issues?
                    Cheers!!

I opened up the mounting hole in the relay and used one of the bolts next to the supplied switch bracket - the one nearest the gas strut pivot point.

I remember that option being in the instructions you sent for installation. Yesterday I ended up going with putting it on the outside of the mount. Worked well there. Thanks for the help everyone!
