  • Brand New Prado Shudder

G'day all, just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to this? and if you would be satisfied with the advice from my dealer.

We picked up a brand new GXL auto diesel about 6 weeks ago (2800kms now). Immediately I noticed a strange shudder only when cruising at around 60km/h. Have not noticed it at any other speed or rev range. Above about 65km/h and below 55km/h it disappears. Its a whole vehicle shudder that to me is coming from the engine/drive train. Definitely not coming coming from the front end.

Took it back to the dealer and mechanic jumped in for a test drive and confirmed the shudder, and that its not normal or anything he has felt before. Left it with them for a day and got the below report:

Test drove vehicle with guest this morning
Confirmed issue as pulsation of entire vehicle at 60kms when coasting
Checked over vehicle mechanically - nothing found
Lowered tyre pressures and retest drove - Same issue
    Refilled Tyres
Test drove vehicle with diagnostic equipment
    Tested transmission settings
Tested transfer flexi lock up settings
    Tested 4wd settings
    Tested torque converter settings
No change to vehicle during any of these tests
Have raised dealer product report with Toyota regarding issue.
We recommend driving vehicle as normal and monitoring issue - if it gets worse before 10k service come back.

Interested to hear if anyone else has had this issue with the current model, and what your thoughts are?

    Cheers,

    Sean

Ah, the great Toyota palm off. I'd be asking to use their Demo until they fix your car.

My dad about ten year ago tried the same with a Toyota. Failed, but he locked the car up in front of their new-car show-room with a sign on the front windscreen stating it was faulty and not being fixed (it was also a shudder and couldn't be fixed locally - nor could it be driven so no loss to him). Went home in the other car and told the dealer he'd only move it to the garage when whatever is being fixed, got fixed. Very quick turn around in about a week (new driveshafts) that fixed the issue. I've always wanted to keep that one up my sleeve in case they don't start looking after their customers

Torque converter shudder? I had similar problem in my 120 series D4D - full flush and replace for the auto transmission fluid, new AT filter = no more shudder

just a guess here - but if it was me trying to fault find that problem i would put the car on a chassis dyno and see if it can be replicated. try back wheels first followed by front wheels or maybe find a 4 wheel dyno. Use a strobe camera aimed at the spinning bits to look for variations. Surely it cant be hard for someone with Toyotas resources.

The one thing that gets me is

We recommend driving vehicle as normal and monitoring issue - if it gets worse before 10k service come back.

How can this be exceptable, they have an extensive service division backed by engineers
How about it stays there and gear starts getting changed over asap

If that means gear box, drive shafts, wheels well so be it

An old post perhaps, but I have the same problem with mine, that looks about the same age. Seano did you ever get this resolved? Cheers

Lycaon, interested to know what brand of transmission fluid you used.

Mine does this at 100 kph. Not related to wheel balancing. Shudder is worse when on a left hand bend. I have asked for it to be checked but they found no fault in the vehicle.

Nazgul see if the shudder comes/goes when you have converter lock/unlock.
