  • Lift or bigger tyres?

Just wondering what a better option is on a 2005 petrol?
Only doing mainly beach and light bush tracks, nothing at all hardcore.
Have been reading the shocks and standard tyres aren't the best and was wondering what has worked for others in a similar situation.
I'm not into modding it too much.
If I can get away with just going the next tyre size up or something that'd be great. Don't really want to make fuel consumption to much higher. Or reduce handling ride quality either.
    Thanks

Bigger tyres will increase fuel consumption. 2" lift is ideal to get a bit more body clearance and improve handling.
1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

I would go with the lift first. Assuming you already have 265/65/17 going up a size to 265/70/17 (common size that does not seem to have problems rubbing anywhere) will give you a little bit of clearance, but will be nowhere near as noticeable daily driving as the improvement from a suspension upgrade, you might even enjoy roundabouts!
Then when the tyres need replacing go bigger

So it'll handle better with a 2 inch lift?
What shocky arrangement should I be looking at? There's so much conflicting stuff to read on here. What will work best for me. Mainly road but a bit of beach and light tracks.
Thanks for any advice and ideas

Assumption, shocks and springs are still vintage 2005 will be a bit tired and not performing that well.

So any suspension upgrade of quality would show improvements in daily driving.

In my case I went with OME, but any reputable brand is going to be way better than what you have now. And yes with a 2" inch lift it handled way better than with the tired old suspension it had before.

I had a 2005 petrol and went with OME. No problems in 90000 + km on some of the worse roads and desert crossings in the country. As you have no bull bar and don't mention heavy loads, go for the lightest springs they have and the sports shocks. OME also do a 30mm lift if that would suit you better.

              This +1

The lift with new shocks will make the car drive a lot nicer. I did it to ours at 190,000 and the improvement was very noticeable, especially while towing the Camper.

I took the Road tyres off mine which were pretty much brand new and sold them for some cash towards some Cooper AT/3s. In hindsight, I should have bought a cheaper AT because the $390 a tyre for the 265/70/17 Coopers cant be justified in my option. They are great offroad, but there is some other options that are $100 a tyre cheaper that would have also been good.

Lift won't increase height of the rear diff though. Bigger tyres will.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Thanks very much for the replies.
I ended up getting a 2006 v6 petrol manual with 246000 on clock for $12000. Totally stock apart from window tint and Toyota tow bar.
Have ordered set of 3 roof racks and a k&n high flow air filter. Next is denso plugs then I'll look into a small lift. Like the 30mm oem idea though.
I'll be carrying camping stuff on racks like gazebo, tent, fishing gear etc so thinking I shouldn't need anything to heavy duty.
It has cooper at3's on it now which I never liked since getting them fitted to my 2011 dmax. The front slid through roundabouts at very low speed.
Good beach/road tyre ideas from people that have tried and tested for my application.
                    Thanks guys.
Loving driving this. Nice and smooth and responsive with a nice tight gearbox

Hankook at-m are a good all rounder. I find them better in sand than my old Mickey Thompson mtz too be honest.

That's pretty bloody good. What's the next size up I can go in a tyre? Want to get diff off the sand for the beach.
                              Cheers
